Jayhawks maintain fourth in both polls
While it took a bit longer to put the game away than expected, the Kansas Jayhawks did enough in their win over Harvard to maintain the fourth spot in both polls on Monday.
The top 5 remained the same this week, with the only Top 10 team suffering a loss being the Virginia Cavaliers. With their loss, they dropped all the way to 13th in the AP Poll and 12th in the Coaches Poll.
Ahead of the Jayhawks are Purdue, UConn and Houston, with Arizona and Texas right behind. Spots 7 through 13 come from the same teams in both polls, with Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas and Gonzaga rounding out the Top 10 of the AP Poll ahead of UCLA, Baylor and Virginia. For the Coaches Poll, Arkansas, UCLA, Alabama and Tennessee round out the Top 10 with Gonzaga, Virginia and Baylor up next.
Besides Virginia, big movers in the polls this week were Miami, who moved up 8 spots in the AP Poll to #14 and 6 spots in the Coaches Poll to #16, Mississippi State, who dropped 6 spots in the AP Poll and 5 spots in the Coaches Poll and Illinois, who dropped 6 spots in the Coaches Poll and entirely out of the AP Poll.
The Big 12 finally got their fifth team in the polls, as Kansas, Texas and Baylor were joined by TCU and new entrant West Virginia. The Horned Frogs moved up to #18 in the AP Poll and stayed at #19 in the Coaches Poll, while the Mountaineers entered both polls at #24 this week. Iowa State, Kansas State and Texas Tech are all receiving votes in both polls as well.
There aren't very many matchups this week between two ranked teams. On Wednesday, #6 Alabama takes on #21 Mississippi State in Starkville. Then on Saturday, #2 UConn goes to Cincinnati to take on #22 Xavier. But every conference starts conference play this week so there will be plenty of big tests.
