Manhattan Jaspers at Kansas Jayhawks Basketball Predictions: Rinse and Repeat

In this story:
The Kansas Jayhawks started off the season as impressively as it gets as they rolled through NC Central from start to finish with huge efforts from all of the stars. Is tonight going to be more of the same? Or will Kansas actually get some resistance as they get ready for next week's test?

I’m not sure Kansas can match the torrid start they had against NC Central, but the fact that the threes rained down and Hunter Dickinson was un-guardable everywhere was such a positive that I can’t even get mad that Bill Self wants me to be a realist. He said that KU wasn’t as good of a three point shooting team as we saw against the Eagles or as bad as we saw in the exhibition matches, and that he expects Kansas to shoot around 38% over the course of the season. I’ll take those numbers but the more the floor gets spread, the more guys like Nick Timberlake, Johnny Furphy, and Kevin McCullar will be open. I’m looking for a (not quite as) dominating performance from KU against the Jaspers.

There aren’t many teams with a lower KenPom ranking than North Carolina Central, but Kansas is playing one of them tonight in Manhattan. Frankly, there’s no need to deviate from Monday’s game plan in the second game of the season. Get the ball inside to Dickinson early, blow the game open by the end of the first half and experiment from there once the game’s no longer in doubt. Once again, I think the most important Jayhawks to watch will be the Furphy, Jackson and Timberlake combo as Self looks for someone to create a little separation in playing time at that fifth spot in the rotation. As long as KU plays a decent game, this one should be another breeze.

It isn’t often that we see the Jayhawks load up the early schedule with a bunch of cupcakes. With three teams in the 300+ range in Kenpom and another in UMKC at 284 right now, Bill Self may have given a squad that doesn’t need so many tune-ups more than we have ever seen. But that doesn’t change anything about this game. Manhattan is awful at pretty much everything, so even though they got a win in their season opener, don’t expect them to put up too much resistance. I think there are a lot of people that are disappointed that the Jayhawks didn’t get to 100 in the last game, including the walk-ons that had a chance to push it over the top. If they get a chance, expect them to get there today.
Kansas 102, Manhattan 59.
