Player Ratings to the Theme of Kansas Throwback Uniforms

Evaluating the individual performances of the Kansas Jayhawks against Oklahoma State by comparing them to a ranking of recent KU throwback uniforms

The Kansas Jayhawks wore throwback uniforms to honor the 1922 National Championship squad. Let's just say that on social media, the thoughts were divided. But this isn't usually the case. In fact, KU's throwback uniforms are usually very well received because, well, they're great. So, in honor of the retro look, let's rate the players according to some throwback unis.

5 Stars:

90’s Circus Font (Dec 18, 2021 vs SFA)

While these aren’t precise throwbacks because of the wheat on the shorts, they look so good that they should be the Jayhawks’ permanent uniforms. These are as close to perfection as it gets.

No one was a good as these circus font uniforms are. These are just the facts.  Would've taken a colossal performance to get compared to these beauties.

4.5 Stars:

1988 National Title (Feb 23, 2013 vs TCU)

These look sharp as well. There’s not a Jayhawk fan out there that wouldn’t take these as permanent home uniforms right now.

David McCormack might just be rounding into late last year David McCormack form.  Now, whether or not that is essential for a deep run in March is subject to debate.  Dave finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

4 Stars:

1952 National Title (Feb 11, 2012 vs OSU)

Add these to the list of amazing throwbacks. The standard block Kansas is great and the stripes. That’s the chef’s kiss right there. They also wore a blue version. Amazing too.

Ochai Agbaji's three point shooting in this one left a little to be desired (one of six from deep), but he looked comfortable driving again.  Maybe it was the switch back to the old shoes? Finished with 20 points, seven boards, and four assists.

Dajuan Harris was good in this one, even making a few threes.  The Columbia, Missouri kid also dished out five assists.

Jalen Wilson was the ultimate streaky player in this one.  At one point, KU's lead bulged to over twenty and Jalen scored seven in a row for KU.  Then he missed some easy ones from up close. Finished the night with 11 and seven boards.

3.5 Stars:

1970s Throwback (Feb 16, 2019 vs WVU)

Man, these are great as well! They’re just not as spectacular as the one’s in the top three spots.

Christian Braun was good but not great in this one.  He hit on only two of seven tries from beyond the arc and finished with 16 points.  His four rebounds was also a recent low for him and given the number of misses from OSU, this seemed odd.

Both Joseph Yesufu and Zach Clemence came in and gave KU a spark.

3 Stars:

1922 National Title (Feb 14, 2022 vs OSU)

I like navy blue. I like the font. I’m not so thrilled with the solid shorts and the white jersey. It did kind of grow on me throughout the game.

No one earned a three star.

2 Stars:

When Kansas wears red

Ok, ok, I know a lot of you like the red uniforms. I don’t. So, while there are no throwbacks that I dislike, Kansas has worn some red faux-throwbacks (Feb 17, 2021 v Baylor) that would be outstanding if they were blue or white.

No one was a two.

1 Star:

The fact that KU hasn’t thrown back to the yellow uniforms

December 3, 1987. Kansas wore yellow uniforms in a game against Western Carolina. Throw back to these immediately!!!

No one was as bad as the fact we haven't been able to see something this awesome.

Tyler Self Memorial No Star:

KJ Adams, Mitch Lightfoot, Bobby Pettiford, Michael Jankovich, and Chris Teahan all played sparingly.
