Player Ratings to the Theme of Forts

Rating the Kansas Jayhawks players after their blowout win against Texas Southern in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

After a dominating performance in Fort Worth, I figured I’d rate various forts. And by the way, if KU plays like this, Fort Worth will make the list next time.

Just in case you're new to these player ratings (or just need a refresher on how they work), here's how the evaluation process happens. First, I choose a subject and rank things according to my preferences. Your preferences will no doubt vary, but that's part of the fun. Then I assign a player to each star rating based on performance, but please note that not all games and not all ratings are equal. It's not completely stats based, but of course stats play a large role in how a player stacks up to others in a particular game.

5 Stars: Out of this world performance. This is a hard to achieve rating and is only reserved for the most impressive or impressionable performances.

4.5 Stars: Very strong performance, packed the stat sheet, provided undeniable intangibles.

4 Stars: A strong performance that falls just short of the standards above.

3.5 Stars: Above average performance, perhaps stands out in one category or one aspect of the game.

3 Stars: Average performance. Also could be a very strong game in one aspect but a very poor game in another such as 15 points but seven turnovers.

2 Stars: Below average performance, or we simply have higher expectations for the player on this particular night.

1 Star: Rare, but if a player has a stinker in all aspects.

Memorial No Star: Named after a former KU walk-on or obscure player and is awarded to the player(s) who didn't have enough playing time to contribute or whose performance isn't worthy of a rating for another reason.

5 Stars:

Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers, Florida

Say what you will about the state of Florida, but the place has beaches and those beaches are very pretty. As far as forts go, these are right up there and top this list.

Remy Martin was a revelation in the first half. He finished six of seven from the floor, scored 15, and had four assists. Oh, and that dunk…

4.5 Stars:

Real Fortresses

Man, there are some great old fortifications around the world. Some of my favorites are the Salzburg Fortress in Austria and the imposing forts in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Dajuan Harris was also very good in this one. Scored 12 points which includes making both of his three point attempts. He added three assists.

4 Stars:

Fort Collins, Colorado

One of the great craft beer destinations in America and surrounded by excellent scenery, Fort Collins makes an ideal getaway from Denver.

Four of five from three will get the job done. Christian Braun did pass up some open shots early when KU was stuttering. Shoot it, man, you’re good at it.

3.5 Stars:

Pillow and Blanket Forts

Popularized by kids and made famous by the television show Community, these are always fun, especially if you had a group sleepover as a child. According to Abed and Troy, pillow forts are far harder to make, and those two almost lost their friendship over the creation of such an epic fort.

David McCormack played enough to get into the flow of the tourney. He had a steal, he had some assists, and he didn’t get hurt. He also finished with nine and seven. Success.

Jalen Wilson turned it on in the second half and finished with eleven points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Mitch Lightfoot was clearly not himself, but he was productive when he got those first half minutes.

Jalen Coleman-Lands went two of three from deep including the buzzer beater at the end of the first half.

3 Stars:

Fortnite

I’ve never played this (I’m more of an original NES man myself), but people LOVED this game and it became a worldwide phenomenon.

Luckily, KU didn’t need a strong game from Ochai Agbaji against Texas Southern.

Joseph Yesufu and KJ Adams played basketball on Thursday.

2 Stars:

Fort Knox

If this place was so secure, why did it constantly get robbed in old movies?

Zach Clemence kept shooting and kept missing.

1 Star:

Fort Leavenworth

I have no idea what the fort is like, but the prison is one of the most intimidating buildings in America. It just looks mean.

No one lands here.

Chris Teahan Memorial No Star:

Chris Teahan.
