Top 25: Despite win, Jayhawks lose ground.

A controversial win on Saturday wasn't enough to keep Kansas in the second spot.

The Kansas Jayhawks survived in the final minute against the TCU Horned Frogs to open up conference play, but on Monday, they were unable to fend off another Big 12 team in the rankings. With a dominating victory over West Virginia to stay undefeated, the Houston Cougars increased their vote total by enough to overtake the Jayhawks in both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll on Monday.

The Big 12 swap was the only change in the top 6 teams of the polls, with the Purdue Boilermakers taking the top spot, and the UConn Huskies, Tennessee Volunteers and Kentucky Wildcats coming just behind. The top 10 were identical between the two polls: the North Carolina Tar Heels, Arizona Wildcats, Oklahoma Sooners and Illinois Fighting Illini occupied the 7th through 10th spots.

The Big 12 has a total of six teams in the AP Poll, with the three teams in the Top 10 joined by the Baylor Bears at 14th, the BYU Cougars at 18th and the Texas Longhorns clinging on to the 25th spot. Cincinnati, Texas Tech, Iowa State and TCU are all receiving votes.

In the Coaches Poll, only five Big 12 teams are featured, with the top 10 teams joined by Baylor at 14th and BYU at 17th. Texas is the first team out of the poll, and Cincinnati, Iowa State, TCU and Texas Tech receiving votes (in order).

We continue to see big movement in the polls, with nine teams dropping at least 4 spots in the each poll (Marquette, Colorado State, BYU, Clemson, Florida Atlantic, Texas, James Madison, Ole Miss and Providence). Similarly, six teams moved up by at least four spots in each poll (Baylor, Wisconsin, Auburn, San Diego State and Creighton in both polls, plus Gonzaga in the Coaches Poll and Utah State in the AP Poll).

The only marquee games on the schedule, where two ranked teams are playing each other, come from the Big 12 this week:

  • #18 BYU heads to Waco to take on #14 Baylor on Tuesday night.
  • #9 Oklahoma heads to Lawrence to take on #3 Kansas.
