Final Season Predictions for Kansas Football: 1 Day until Kickoff

With the end of the offseason here, our staff takes one last chance to tell you what they expect from Lance Leipold's Kansas Jayhawks this year.

It's that time of year, where we are literally out "days until" the season begins. Tomorrow night at 7pm, the Kansas Jayhawks will kick off the 2022 football season against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. It is likely the most highly anticipated season debut in over a decade.

But there is a wide gap between the worst-case scenario for this team and the best-case scenario we outlined yesterday. So what is the most likely result for the Jayhawks this year? We asked our staff to give you their predictions, but make sure you let us know how you think the season will play out.

Kyle Davis: The season over/under for win total is 2.5 and I would definitely take the over there. I feel confident about 3-9 but I’m even going to jump further on the optimism train and say 4-8. I think the Jayhawks beat Tennessee Tech, Duke, and then two Big 12 games, maybe West Virginia and either Texas Tech or Iowa State.

Brendan Dzwierzynski: I’m in lock step with Kyle, I’m predicting a 4-8 final record, bumping KU over its win total number. I’ll even throw TCU into the group of beatable teams. Even more than adding more wins (with the program’s most talented roster in years), I think, and hope, this is also the year KU can avoid the horrific, 30-40 point blowouts. That would be a big step forward as a team.

Derek Noll: Let’s stick around on the four wins train. But why oh why hasn’t anyone mentioned Texas, the most beatable of all the Big XII teams? I’ll go ahead and say that KU takes care of Tennessee Tech, Duke, WVU, and Texas. And I’m also on board with Brendan and believe that this could be the year that competitiveness happens in every game. Looking forward to a year three bowl possibility next year.

Lucas Murphy: I will be the optimist of the group and could easily be kicked off the horse very quickly. But I'm going to say the Jayhawks go 6-6 this season. The culture has shifted in Lawrence and the players are buying into the program. There are some very winnable games on the schedule. Just ask Texas if they thought they would lost to Kansas. I predict wins against Tennessee Tech, TCU, Duke, Baylor, Texas Tech and Kansas State.

Andy Mitts: If you have been listening to me on either the Rock Chalk Podcast or over on the Ten12 Podcast, you already know what's coming. I'm glad to see that my optimism has rubbed off on the rest of this group, but I'm not sure they have gone quite far enough. Except for Lucas. A+

The Jayhawks have a LOT of things going their way this season. They have two talented quarterbacks that each could be a successful starter. They have an entire stable of depth that can help them remain competitive through the end of games. And they have a schedule full of teams that all have their own serious issues to work through (except maybe one difficult stretch at the end of October). Add it all up and I have the Jayhawks shocking the world by making a bowl game this season. For the record, I think they start 4-2, with losses to Houston and Iowa State, and then they beat Texas Tech before sneaking past either Texas or Kansas State to end the season. And of course when they get to the bowl game, they'll be paired up against a low-level SEC team that has already packed it up for the year.

I won't be shocked if I'm wrong, but I also don't think that this prediction is as ridiculous as a lot of people want to make it out to be. I'll guess we'll see who's right at the end of the year.
