Kansas at Texas Kickoff Time: Another National Spotlight

The Big 12 Conference announced the broadcast schedule for Week 5, and once again the Jayhawks got a featured spot. In arguably the best Big 12 matchup of the week, the Kansas Jayhawks will take on the Texas Longhorns down in Austin at 2:30pm on ABC.

Other scheduled broadcasts in the conference are:

  • Cincinnati Bearcats at BYU Cougars: Friday, 9:15pm on ESPN
  • Baylor Bears at UCF Knights: Saturday, 2:30pm on FS1 or FS2
  • Houston Cougars at Texas Tech Red Raiders: Saturday, 2:30pm on FS1 or FS2
  • Iowa State Cyclones at Oklahoma Sooners: Saturday, 6pm on FS1
  • West Virginia Mountaineers at TCU Horned Frogs: Saturday, 7pm on ESPN2

It is the first time the Jayhawks will play on the linear television channel ABC in the Lance Leipold era, and the first time since 2019, when Kansas hosted the Oklahoma Sooners. It's also the first time in a while that none of the games from the conference will be on the ESPN+ streaming platform.

Assuming that the Jayhawks and Longhorns both win this week, this will be a strong candidate for a visit from either ESPN's College Gameday or FOX's Big Noon Kickoff, with both teams being likely ranked and undefeated. But there are quite a few other games that could take that spot instead, including (current AP ranking below):

  • #11 Utah Utes at #14 Oregon State Beavers: 8pm on FS1
  • #5 USC Trojans at #19 Colorado Buffaloes: TBD
  • #9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at # 18 Duke Blue Devils: TBD
  • #12 LSU Tigers at #15 Ole Miss Rebels: TBD

Those are just the teams that are both ranked this week. A huge showing elsewhere could push some other games into contention, and let downs by any of the teams in these games could help the chances for the Jayhawks.

Again, the 2:30pm timeslot on a major network is a huge win for the Jayhawks. Most fans are accustomed to being shunted into bad time periods on the far reaches of cable, having to scrounge to find a way to get their game. And while there are two other Big 12 games in the same timeslot, it is safe to say that most of the eyes nationally that are tuned into the conference will get to see this game.
