The Big 12 officially announced the dates for the conference matchups this upcoming football season, and the Kansas Jayhawks have a very unusual slate. With only four conference games at home this season, the Jayhawks only have 6 home games to work with this season. With the calendar allowing for an extra week between week 1 and the Big 12 Championship, each team also has two bye weeks in the schedule this year.

With the non-conference games already known, the announcement of the conference schedule gives us the full slate for the upcoming season:

Aug 29: vs Lindenwood
Sept 7: at Illinois
Sept 14: vs UNLV
Sept 21: at West Virginia
Sept 28: vs TCU
Oct 5: at Arizona State
Oct 12: BYE
Oct 19: vs Houston
Oct 26: at Kansas State
Nov 2: BYE
Nov 9: vs Iowa State
Nov 16: at BYU
Nov 23: vs Colorado
Nov 30: at Baylor
Dec 7: Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship

After taking a bit to digest the schedule, I have some early thoughts:

  • I don't like the move for the Kansas State game. While I know that it hasn't always been at the end of the season, there has been real value having that game routinely at the end of the year. It might be nice to avoid the injury risk of having it late in the season, but it makes the game feel a bit less special.
  • The bye weeks are too close to each other. The Jayhawks are the only team that has just 2 games in between their breaks. Thankfully the bye weeks come late in the schedule, with Kansas being among the last teams to get their first bye in Week 7. It could be worse, and may end up being a blessing depending on how injuries stack up.
  • Another fast start is certainly possible. The only game that should be tough in the initial six-game stretch is the conference opener at West Virginia. TCU should be better this year than they were last year, but there is still a gap between the two teams as of this writing. And going to Arizona State is... well, it's Arizona State.

We'll break down the schedule more over the summer and as updates become available, but this looks like it could be shaping up to be a special season in 2024.
