Kansas Jayhawks at Baylor Bears - Statistical Recap: Too little too late.

In this story:
Once again, the Kansas Jayhawks fell behind early in their game this week only to make a big comeback in the second half. Unfortunately, the hole was just too deep as the Jayhawks lost their final game to the Baylor Bears before the bye.
To help wrap up our coverage of this game, we run through the box score to see what jumps out.
Offense
The Jayhawks were outgained by almost 150 yards in this game, and the mistakes in the first half are largely to blame. Quentin Skinner had two fumbles on the day, although one was EXTREMELY questionable. But the Jayhawks couldn't get out of their own way in the first half, and the offense couldn't do enough in the second half to come all the way back.
Kansas won the turnover margin, with those two fumbles eclipsed by the two Baylor Shapen interceptions and a strip sack fumble. Unfortunately, the offense wasn't able to take advantage.
Passing
This game played out offensively very similar to the TCU game, with an abysmal first half followed up with an electric second half. Unfortunately, the passing game wasn't enough to overcome a slow start from all sides of the ball.
Jason Bean was 16-27 for 232 yards and one touchdown. He struggled in the first half, but the offense really opened up in the second half and he started to string together some big passes
Quentin Skinner caught 4 passes for 66 yards and one touchdown, but his two fumbles really marred the performance for him. That being said, he made some big plays in the second half to at least somewhat make up for it.
Lawrence Arnold caught 3 passes for 53 yards.
Trevor Wilson caught 2 passes for 52 yards. He showed off his deep threat potential with a 47 yard catch.
Mason Fairchild had 2 catches for 19 yards.
There were multiple players who got a single catch: Jared Casey (20 yards), Sevion Morrison (12 yards), Kevin Terry (9 yards) and Tanaka Scott (3 yards).
Rushing
Kansas was absolutely dominated in the run game, totaling only 56 net yards on the day. They did score twice on the ground though
Bean only gained 25 yards on 8 carries. He also rushed for a score.
Devin Neal led the Kansas rushers with 32 yards on 10 carries, with 1 touchdown.
Sevion Morrison had just 2 carries for 3 yards.
Defense
It was a tale of two halves, as the defense struggled early in this game. But they really stiffened up in the second half, and had some timely plays late in the first half to keep the game from getting entirely out of hand. But any time you give up 273 yards on the ground and 437 yards total, it was not a successful day.
Marvin Grant led the Jayhawks with 11 tackles. Lonnie Phelps and Kenny Logan Jr. both had 8 tackles on the day.
Lorenzo McCaskill had 5 tackles. Rich Miller totaled 7 tackles, but left the game with an injury.
Jereme Robinson and Caleb Sampson each had a sack. Robinson's came on a sack of quarterback Blake Shapen, which he scooped up and ran all the way back to the Baylor 9.
Craig Young and Ra'Mello Dotson each had 4 tackles, and both intercepted Shapen passes.
Special Teams
The special teams were ok, but they weren't relied on by either team for big plays in this game.
Reis Vernon punted twice for Kansas, but it was Bean who pooch punted a ball inside the 20-yard line.
The Jayhawks did not have any punt returns in this game. Wilson returned a single kickoff for just 2 yards.
Jacob Borcila made his only field goal attempt, and he was perfect on extra points.
The Jayhawks head into the bye week looking to get healthy again. Their next game is a home matchup against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on November 5th. The game time will be announced on Monday October 31st.
