Our staff gets together to tell you what they expect to happen this weekend.

Kansas Jayhawks at Oklahoma Sooners Predictions: Big trends will continue.

In this story:

The Kansas Jayhawks took their first lost at the hands of a very talented TCU team, but they still impressed in that game. And the next opponent is one that would have been expected to be enormous favorites: the Oklahoma Sooners.

With Oklahoma coming off of a three-game skid for the first time since 1998, a year where they had a 5-game losing streak and finished under .500. Can Oklahoma avoid falling to those same depths this season? Will they be able to get back some momentum by beating the Jayhawks this weekend? Our staff gives their thoughts below.

The name on the uniform should be the only reason why Oklahoma is a heavy favorite in this game. KU has been playing better and it’s clicking offensively, meanwhile OU is a sieve on defense. The Jayhawks will have to commit to their bread-and-butter offensive play calls and will need to tackle soundly this week, but I think KU will escape Norman with the win. Avoiding the costly turnover or back-breaking penalty would also be nice.

Oklahoma has been throttled three times in a row, so I’m going to go with Kansas in this one even though KU has lost its star QB for now. Jason Bean did all he was asked and almost led Kansas all the way back against TCU, so let’s see if the system is as good as we’ve been led to believe.

The Kansas Jayhawks unfortunately came up short against a very good TCU football team. We learned a lot from this game and I think it will bode well for the future and the game against the Oklahoma Sooners. This team has heart and can overcome adversity. Jason Bean took over for an injured Jalon Daniels and played above expectations. He had a couple miscues but for the most part was in sync with his wideouts. I expect a week of practice where he is preparing for the start will help with cohesion and confidence.

Mason Fairchild continues to impress and he is an important asset on this offense I feel he will make another impactful play in this game. I am going to continue being enamored by the wide receivers as they make highlight plays every week and I think it continues against the Sooners. The defense is going to be tested but when you play in the Big 12 you will be tried every single week. Defensive end Lonnie Phelps currently ranks fifth in the country and second in Big 12 with six sacks and he is going to have to apply pressure against this Sooner’s offense. I believe the Jayhawks go into Norman and go boomer on the Sooners.

I could see this one going any number of different ways, and that has made me waffle back and forth. On the podcast preview, I said that I think this will be a close game, with Kansas pulling it out in the end. But regardless of the final result, I see Bean and the offense being very successful, as Oklahoma has injury issues, awareness issues AND scheme issues. The Jayhawks are not the team to try and get right on your defense.

As for the offense, there are some serious questions about how successful Dillon Gabriel is going to be. He has struggled in multiple games this season for large stretches, and it's unknown just how much his prior concussion will affect him once he is back on the field. But this is an opportunistic defense that bogs down the opponent, setting themselves up for a late game push. I definitely think that Oklahoma CAN have success, but the more that I think about it, the harder it is to envision Oklahoma being able to hang with the high-powered Kansas offense.
