Kansas Jayhawks fall out of both Top 25 polls

A close loss with a 3rd-string quarterback inexplicably drops the Jayhawks from the rankings.

There is absolutely no doubt that the loss for the Kansas Jayhawks against the Texas Tech Red Raiders was disappointing. But Sunday afternoon they also found out that the loss was enough for the voters to remove them from both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll.

The Jayhawks still gained enough votes to be the first team out in the Coaches Poll and just behind Iowa as the second team out in the AP Poll.

The top 8 teams in each poll remained unchanged, and the top 12 are identical between the two polls as well. The Big 12 has four teams in the rankings, with the Texas Longhorns at #7 in both polls, the Oklahoma Sooners at #13 in the Coaches Poll and #14 in the AP Poll, the Kansas State Wildcats at #24 in the Coaches Poll and #23 in the AP Poll and the Oklahoma State Cowboys at #25 in the Coaches Poll and #24 in the AP Poll. No other Big 12 teams received any votes in either poll.

As much as the previous two weeks have shown how far this program has come under Lance Leipold, this week has shown just how much further they have to go to combat the national perception that this program just isn't ready. The fact that the Jayhawks took the punch that they did early in the game, suffered some serious injuries and still came back to make a game of it would normally be something that would allow a team to hang on at the bottom of the rankings. Especially against a Texas Tech team that has been improving after some early upsets but had the preseason expectations of competing for the conference championship.

Kansas gets an opportunity to earn their way back into the rankings as they host the Kansas State Wildcats this weekend in the annual Sunflower Showdown. Kickoff is scheduled for 6pm and the game will be broadcast on FS1.
