When the Kansas Jayhawks upset the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, it sent shockwaves through the college football world. Sure, there were plenty of people who were already questioning if Oklahoma would be able to stay undefeated and make their case for the College Football Playoff, but not many thought that the Jayhawks would be able to be the ones to give the Sooners their first loss. Especially in a game where the Jayhawks made a ton of mistakes and had to fight back from body blow after body blow.

The victory was impressive enough to garner some additional attention Monday, as the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) named the Jayhawks the Cheez-It National Team of the Week:

It was the first victory for the Jayhawks over the Sooners since 1997, the first win over a Top 10 team since defeating #5 Virginia Tech in the 2008 Orange Bowl, and clinched bowl eligibility for the second straight season. It was the first regular season win over a Top 10 team since a victory over #4 Colorado during the 1995 season and the first regular season victory at home over a Top 10 team since #2 Oklahoma lost to the Jayhawks during the 1984 season.

The Jayhawks have earned National Team of the Week honors from the FWAA five other times in their history, with the most recent coming after the 57-56 overtime win over Texas in Austin in 2021. Previous awards were during the 2019, 2016, 2008 and 2007 seasons.

The 23rd-ranked Jayhawks are back in action on the road this week, as they travel to Ames, IA for a matchup with the Iowa State Cyclones. Kickoff is scheduled for 6pm on Saturday November 4th, with the game being broadcast on ESPN.
