In this story:

As LSU ramps up for a highly-anticipated season, the program has seen emerging stars across every position group this fall camp to become leaders and secure starters.

But one group didn't need any evaluation process to find its leader, with linebacker Whit Weeks becoming the quarterback of what could be a top-ranked defensive unit.

He's not just showcasing his widely recognized talents when he's in uniform, but also setting the tone to define himself as a leader.

There are still two Saturdays till LSU kicks off the exciting season. Weeks has yet to return to the stage of Death Valley, but he's already all the talk in the media.

Just this month, Weeks has been named to the Bednarik Award Watch List, Butkus Award Watch List, and Nagurski Award Watch List. He's on more watch lists than anyone on the roster, standing out as a veteran among a team full of new transfer portal talent.

And recently, he stood out within the entire conference, being named first-team All-SEC for the preseason.

He's ready to have a highly watched season, leaving his legacy at LSU before heading to the NFL Draft. But there's more to the talented Tiger than his football skills.

Lineback Leadership

Entering his fourth year with the Tigers, Weeks has established his identity in the program, being named permanent team captain before the 2025 season, and continuing the role under head coach Lane Kiffin.

But he's not the kind of leader who waits his turn to be in charge; he takes control over the field, while being the ideal role model for young talent to look up to and listen to.

He's been seen in fall camp calling things out and directing the defense, making sure his unit doesn't make the classic game-time mistakes before the season arrives.

He is the ultimate product of defensive coordinator Blake Baker. Being coached by Baker for four years has made him into the strong, pressure-fueled linebacker he is, while also making him the voice on the defense to create an unstoppable identity.

In between Baker's sneaky formations and blitz-heavy defenses, he is still a successful developer of players, bringing Weeks to the position he is in today, with still another year to grow.

He's the ideal player to coach from the entire staff, being trusted as a leader before Kiffin started calling practices, and helping bring the crowded defense together this fall camp.

While still turning around and being a major role model to the rest of the team, especially those who just walked into the program this offseason.

It's important to keep an eye out for him this season. Not just watching his intense way of playing, but also his standout leadership both on and off the field. He's a total package, and it's hard to ignore.
