Coach Mario Cristobal is renowned as one of the top recruiters in the country and landed two star CB’s in his secondary.

One of which through the Transfer Portal and one from the prep ranks. However, these two Canes have a special relationship. Davonte Brown and Damari Brown are not only siblings, but the sons of former Miami national champion corner Selwyn Brown.

Their journey began right in U Miami’s backyard just 30 miles north in Plantation, Florida. The two brothers played locally at American Heritage High School in Plantation which is ranked the 11th best football school in America.

At American Heritage they learned from another college football star and NFL cornerback Pat Surtain, Sr. Surtain coincidentally took this job over from our current assistant director of recruiting and former Miami star corner Mike Rumph who has a great understanding of what it means to play at a school like American Heritage.

At American Heritage, Davonte Brown’s team finished No. 1 in the regular season 5A rankings and No. 3 among Florida high schools. In addition to having great success against future Power 5 stars and NFL players, he ran track in high school improving his speed and acceleration on the field to go along with a 6-foot-2 frame. That has been an ideal length for a corner at any level.

UCF Knights (2020-2022)

Davonte Brown was a standout for UCF.

Brown was a 3-star coming out of high school, as he was just 160 pounds at this time and needed to add weight in college. This was no problem for him at UCF as he added 25 pounds to his frame, and he started all three seasons. He was UCF’s best cornerback the past two years under head coach Gus Malzahn.

The now former UCF corner recorded 90 tackles in 3 years and did not allow a touchdown in 2021 as a sophomore. This was 418 consecutive snaps without giving up a score which finished second in the AAC to NFL superstar Ahmad Sauce Garnder.

Off the field, the older of the two Browns has been a scholar. The Human Communications major earned the honors of Dean’s List amidst his remarkable sophomore season.

This past year he took a minor step back, but still recorded 30 tackles, 3 turnovers and 4 passes defended. Following in his father’s footsteps, he decided he needed a change and transferred to Miami where his brother Damari just committed to coming out of American Heritage.

Damari Brown was regarded as a 4 star recruit within the 2023 recruiting class. He earned offers from countless top programs such as Alabama, Clemson, and rival Florida State. He is regarded as speedy, athletic, and aggressive, with a strong frame at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds.

A prime note on Damari Brown would be his prior level of success in man coverage. With the heavy nickel packages and diverse, unorthodox looks Lance Guidry provides, it will be very intriguing to see how he utilizes the younger Brown when his name is called.

Miami added two excellent players to the roster with the Brown brothers. Their story has brought them back together at The U and they should both be seeing the field quite often this fall.
