In this story:

The spring game for the Hurricanes was a chance to see Tyler Van Dyke in action with the air raid offense

Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shannon Dawson let his starting signal caller have a plethora of options for how and when to throw the football. That's how the air raid offense operates at its best, and Van Dyke displayed his abilities to make it work well.

Here are a few takeaways from Van Dyke from the spring game.

Comfort. That’s the first thing that stood out about Van Dyke. He was comfortable whether his first read was there or if he had to pull the football down and extend the play.

During the spring game, however, Van Dyke went 13 of 19 passing attempts for 185 yards, including an absolutely fantastic corner route pass to wide receiver Jacolby George for a score.

Van Dyke even scrambled a few times to make plays with his legs, something that he was not nearly as likely to do the past couple of seasons.

After the game, Van Dyke talked a little bit about the spring game effort from himself and the offense as a whole.

“I thought it was good,” Van Dyke said of the offensive effort. “I mean, there’s definitely stuff to improve on. You’re not going to be perfect, but you gotta be as close to perfect as possible.”

His workmanlike approach to the interview also augmented his efforts on the actual gridiron. Van Dyke was quick to make decisions and was also accurate on difficult passes against good coverage. He consistently allowed his wide receivers a chance to make plays with the football after the catch by throwing the ball away from defenders.

Part of that stemmed from how Van Dyke and his pass catchers have gained chemistry. Van Dyke discussed that as well.

“I think tonight, that was our best communication night. In this type of environment, getting all the plays and signals, just communicating well. It’s what I thought we did well tonight.”

That comment was accentuated by his ability to keep the football out of harm's way.

If Van Dyke’s intended target was not going to catch the football, neither was a defender. Not even counting the younger players and just with the talent Miami has assembled at wide receiver like but not limited to Xavier Restrepo, George, and Colbie Young, as long as Van Dyke keeps his interceptions low, this will be a big-play offense in 2023. One more key point about Van Dyke.

When talking with the media, or just walking around the field after the game had ended, he was relaxed and just having a good time. Football should be fun. It was obvious Van Dyke was in his element. That bodes well for the 2023 Miami offense and the overall won-loss record.
