Former Canes Face-Off in NFL And Say The U Is Still Tight End U

Former Hurricane tight ends Brevin Jordan and Will Mallory Clashed in NFL's Week 2 slate of games.

There's always debate about which school produces the best NFL players, often narrowed down to the position. For years, Miami has been at the center of that conversation when it comes to tight ends. Having produced all-time greats like Jeremy Shockey and Jimmy Graham, the Hurricanes have been producing big blocking pass catches for decades.

This Sunday, two of Miami's most recent products met in a Week 2 NFL showdown. Former Miami tight ends Brevin Jordan (Houston Texans) and Will Mallory (Indianapolis Colts) were suited up for Houston's matchup with Indy, and Brevin took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express his delight in seeing his former teammate and to let everyone know who the real "Tight End U" is.

"THIS WHY YOU GO TO THE U!" said Jordan. "Came in together, same position, grinder together, COMPETED against each other, never left, never swayed, stayed true and now we both playing against each other in the NFL. Why Miami?? This [is] why. #TEU."

Members of the same class, Jordan was selected in the fifth round of the 2021 draft, while Mallory stuck around for another two seasons and was also selected in the fifth round of 2023. Both have made an immediate impact for their teams this season, with each tight end notching professional catches in their battle. In their head-to-head matchup, each former 'Cane finished with two catches, Jordan's adding up to 27 yards and Mallory's to 49, but Jordan and his Colts came away with the 31-20 win.

Jordan and Mallory look set to carve out a solid NFL career and one thing that might help their early years is having a young quarterback. Both will be playing under a rookie signal caller this year, and it's pretty common that an inexperienced QB's security blanket is his tight end. That means we could be seeing a lot more out of these "tight end U" graduates as the season goes on.

As for the Hurricanes, their next man up is Cam McCormick who's already been named a captain by head coach Mario Cristobal. McCormick's a senior who transferred in after four years at Oregon, but he's blended well with the current roster and there's a lot of season left. Depending on Miami's final season result, we may see another Hurricanes' tight end donning NFL gear in 2024.
