What Went Right, Wrong, And Expected In Miami's Win Over Temple

AllHurricanes' Liam Willerup Shares His Thoughts On Miami's Dominate Victory of The Owls

In this story:

Despite all the chatter that the Miami Hurricanes would struggle under the tough conditions at Lincoln Financial Field, the Canes proved that it wasn't going to slow them down. Looking back on the 41-7 win, this was what I thought about how Miami played:

What Went Right: Henry Parrish, Jr. and Rushing Attack

While the team as a whole totaled 323 yards on the ground, 139 of those yards and two scores came from Henry Parrish Jr.. Even though all of the running backs have had a chance to shine in this committee so far, Parrish showed that he's still the clear top back on this team. Parrish also had five runs of 10-plus yards on the day as well.

Despite the strides taken by Donald Chaney Jr. and Mark Fletcher this season, Parrish will steal be the back that Shannon Dawson looks to when he needs to get this run game started. I'd expect for him to carry over this dominance on the ground into ACC play.

What Went Wrong: The Penalties

Sure, the penalties didn't really make a dent in Miami's 30-plus point win margin. That having been the case, it shouldn't have been a problem today. Miami's seven penalties added to an already undesirable total now at 30 on the season. Six of those penalties came from the offense alone. Javion Cohen accounted for two false starts and those have been the mental errors that have sometimes hurt The U.

Georgia Tech might be the last game for a while that Miami can get away with their penalty problem. A game on the road like the one at North Carolina (Oct. 14) could be loss if the Hurricanes do not clean up the penalties. Especially in close games, the Hurricanes can't rack up penalties and give up free yards.

What Was Expected: Dominant Defense

I've been insistent that the Hurricanes need to convert their pressures into sacks if this team wants to make a run for the ACC Championship game. Last night the Hurricanes created three sacks. It was good to see Leonard Taylor III finally getting one, too.

Additionally, Jahfari Harvey recovered a fumble and Te'Cory Couch had two interceptions. While expected against a team like Temple, this was a good sign that the Hurricanes can make plays on defense.

Kamren Kinchens remained out, but the ball-hawking All-American safety should return to the lineup after the bye and help the defense even more.
