The Miami Hurricanes have landed edge defender Daylen Russell.

The 2024 edge defender decided on the Canes despite offers from many other programs, including Nebraska, Louisville, UCF, Florida State, Florida International, West Virginia, and Central Michigan.

Coming from Miami (Fla.) Columbus, the same high school that produced head coach Mario Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal, Russell could end up playing one or both of the outside linebacker and defensive end positions. He has a rare set of skills that go beyond the physical traits of tackling the ball carrier.

Russell has shown a natural intelligence with how he attacks plays without overrunning an opportunity to make a tackle at or behind the line of scrimmage.

Patience. That’s been the biggest asset for the 6-foot-2 and 250-pound recruit when setting the edge and stopping opposing players. Speaking of, that should probably be considered Russell's best attribute.

When asked to rush the passer, he’s also done so from a two-point or a three-point stance. He can bend and get around the corner in a hurry. That position flexibility will come in handy for Miami defensive coordinator Lance Guidry.

Here were the latest recruiting rankings for Russell based on his evaluations from the primary scouting services:

Ranking order was national, position, and then state.

247 Sports: Unranked, 106, and 169

ESPN: Unranked across the board

On3: Unranked, 142, and 201

Rivals: Unranked, 34, and 172

Russell was Miami’s ninth verbal commitment for the class of 2024, and was the first edge defender to join the Canes. Russell was also the second consecutive Hurricanes commitment from Dade County, joining Miami (Fla.) Central linebacker Vincent Shavers.
