Outside Factors Impacting Miami Recruiting

Tennessee’s impending probation, timing for recruits and more

The Miami Hurricanes control their recruiting efforts in regards to which recruits they want to sign.

They do not control, however, many of the other factors that go into a final decision for any given prospect. Here were some of the primary areas that needed to be discussed prior to Miami beginning its first big recruiting weekend.

When will the NCAA finally hand out the full list of ramifications for Tennessee’s pay-for-play scandal?

Tennessee recruits the state of Florida hard, and honestly does a good job of recruiting outside of the South, too. The Canes go against the Vols quite often. It’s time for the NCAA (actually, past time) to let the sanctions be known. It’s not fair to recruits and anyone else involved in their recruitments either.

No matter when it does happen, it’s going to impact every school that competes with Tennessee for recruits, Miami included.

Decision timelines, how do they impact Miami recruiting?

This will always be difficult for any coaching staff. When a top-notch recruit wants to wait until the very end of the recruiting cycle – like elite wide receiver Joshisa Trader will probably do – that means that if a school misses on that young man they could also miss on other recruits because they made earlier decisions.

That’s simply the nature of the beast with recruiting. There’s not a darn thing a coaching staff like Miami can do about it. All-in or not? Sometimes Miami will have to roll the dice if they want the truly elite recruit.

Game times impact recruiting, too.

When a school has a noon kickoff, that’s horrible for recruiting. Let’s be honest, teenagers do not generally like getting up early on their days off from school. Plus, they have to travel to get to a game.

That’s a big reason why coaching staffs often prefer mid-afternoon kickoffs and night games. That being the case, the television advertisers/networks set those kickoff times, not coaches and schools.

It’s all about the Benjamins.

That’s probably why more and more schools have truly attempted to line up the June official visits. It’s easier to spend more time with a prospect during a non-game day official visit.

To stay or not to stay?

No matter how hard a program recruits an in-state player, Miami included, many of today’s top recruits flat out want a major change of scenery.

During the 1980s and 1990s, most top recruits stayed much closer to home than they do now, and Florida was a state where recruits were truly loyal to Florida, Florida State and Miami. That trend has completely flipped. Less than half of Florida’s top recruits (and it's similar in many other states) tend to stay within the state for college.

There’s been much debate about why this happens, and it’s ranged from answers like the internet, education, college football programs recruiting more nationally, more games on television so recruits have become more comfortable with far away places, etc.

Whatever the case might be, or a combination of events, Mario Cristobal and Miami have adjusted its recruiting efforts and has done well with cherry picking top recruits across America to offset players leaving the Sunshine State.

Overall, recruiting has changed dramatically within the last 20 years and college football programs – Miami included – have needed to adjust.
