Being a college football coach can be a grind, especially when it comes to the long hours of recruiting.

More specifically, there have typically been a wide variety of attitudes and personalities that college coaches would meet and communicate with when recruiting top-notch prospects. It’s a part of a really difficult process that has driven many college coaches to the NFL or just retiring altogether.

As defined by former NFL Hall of Fame and current Miami defensive line coach Jason Taylor, recruiting has a rather unique aspect to it for him.

“It’s interesting sometimes,” Taylor said with a smile. “I’m used to being the one that doesn’t text people back right away, doesn’t call people back. You get the blame of your gold jacket or whatever…think that you can take your time replying.

“Now I feel what people that reach out to me sometimes feel. ‘It ain’t no fun when the rabbit got the gun.’ You know? But, it’s part of it man. You just keep chipping away at it. Just keep chipping away at it.

“Most of the kids have been great. Families have been great. We still have to go out and work and out-compete…and out-recruit, every other school in the nation to get what we need to turn this program to where it needs to be.”

First off, and anyone can see it from the video that’s playing at the top of the article, Taylor was brutally honest and did so without being asked about what he offered. Hats off to him for doing that.

Keep in mind, he recorded 774 tackles and 139.5 sacks during his NFL career. He's used to being successful and does not hear a lot of no's in his life, or simply having his text messages ignored.

That being the case, Taylor basically admitted he didn’t like it when he didn’t get immediate replies from recruits. Not many coaches will touch that subject.

He also pointed out during the first part of the video that “I’ve always wanted to be elite at everything I do.”

That statement, along with having also seen how he conducted himself with the media for the first time was also another indicator that he’s truly a guy that pushes as hard as he can, recruiting or otherwise. That bodes well for Taylor's coaching career, as well as the Canes football team overall.

Finally, It was great to listen and learn from Taylor during his first press conference. Good luck to him with continuing his coaching career, and with the text message waiting game that sometimes goes along with recruiting big-time prospects, too.
