The Miami 2023 recruiting class had high-level talent at almost every position. That does not mean all the raw numbers were met at each spot.

The lone interior defensive lineman that was signed would be Joshua Horton from Fairburn (Ga.) Langston Hughes. While Horton will do great things for the Canes, more numbers will be needed along the interior defensive line with the 2024 recruiting class.

One of the prospects that Mario Cristobal and his staff just offered would be Kamron Beavers from Bay Springs (Miss.) High School. Watching this man’s junior film helped to quickly make it obvious why he has been offered by the Canes, as well as Alabama, Ole Miss, Colorado, Texas A&M, LSU, and Texas among others.

In fact, Beavers’ film showed a player that can physically overtake offensive linemen with sheer bull strength. There were moments when Beavers would move beyond the blocker quickly and then barrel-over another player on his way to the football. More importantly, he did just about everything fast.

The 6-foot-4 and 330-pound recruit played in an upfield defensive scheme, i.e. he played in a one-gap scheme that allowed Beavers to use his quickness to create tackles for loss and sacks.

It’s rare for a big young player to be better at a one-gap scheme at Beavers’ size. Usually anyone in that 330 pound range does better taking up blockers and allowing linebackers to flow to the football.

Additionally, Beavers displayed the ability to change direction and move laterally down the line to continue after the ball carrier. He proved to be fluid with his running style while giving chase, which also aided him in making more plays.

Finally, he was a prospect that simply liked to be physical. Make no mistake, Beavers knew he was the biggest dude on the field and played like it. There was a lot to like about how this young man played and it’s simply not surprising that Cristobal and his new defensive coordinator – Lance Guidry – offered him a scholarship.

For the Canes to get back to the top of college football, players like Beavers will be needed. Just cannot teach 330 pounds and the type of athleticism this young man has shown, and he’s capable of becoming an interior presence that college offensive coordinators need to scheme against and/or double team.

Yes, Miami could certainly use more of that with its 2024 recruiting class.
