Legacy Projection: Michigan Football Trending to Land Familiar Name

The Michigan Wolverines are hot on the recruiting trail for someone they should be really familiar with.

Marcus Ray was one of Michigan’s stars for the 1997 National Championship team. Charles Woodson won the Heisman Trophy that season, and was Michigan’s best player. Ray was great in his own right, picking off five passes as the starter at strong safety for that defense that was one of the best in the country. Ray’s big season helped him earn an All-American honor in 1997. He was also a two-time All Big Ten member.

Now, it looks like both players could have sons that wear the winged helmet in the near future.

Charles Woodson Jr. is already committed to Michigan, and Marquis Ray is trending in a very positive direction for the Wolverines, according to On3’s Ethan McDowell.

Where They Stand

Michigan made its offer to Ray during the summer. Understandably, Michigan was immediately placed into Ray’s top-5, and he plans to attend Michigan’s season opener against Western Michigan in a couple of weeks.

Between all of the connections that Ray has, McDowell has given an official prediction that the Wolverines will land Ray to add to their defensive backfield.

How Ray Fits

Ray moved from Ohio to Michigan for his final high school season, which means he is now in Michigan’s backyard. Kyle Whittingham has talked extensively about taking care of his own backyard, and that makes a legacy fit like Ray even more important than he might already be.

He plays offense and defense in high school, but would likely enroll in the secondary should he choose Michigan for his college career.

The secondary is the place to be if you want to find your way onto the field quickly. Jyaire Hill, Zeke Berry, and Rod Moore are all out of eligibility after the upcoming season, which means there will be opportunities for new players to find their way onto the field. The transfer portal obviously can change a lot of things, but if Ray’s ball skills are anything like his father’s, Michigan could use another ballhawk in the secondary.

Another Factor

One big factor in Michigan’s favor here is one of Ray’s mentors, who is an all-time great at Michigan in former defensive back Mike Sainristil.

Sainristil was one of Michigan’s best players for the 2023 national championship defense as their nickel back. He led the team in interceptions, and had a nose for the end zone. His interception in the national championship game against Washington essentially sealed that Michigan would end its championship drought.

Ray is a slot defender in high school, and could try to emulate Sainristil at the next level should he choose to head to Michigan.

Between Ray’s own father, and his mentor both being former Michigan greats, it’s hard to envision that Marquis Ray will be wearing a different helmet next fall.
