If you weren’t aware before tonight’s game who Wofford was, I can tell you Tom Izzo was. He spent a lot of time at practice talking about how well coached this team was and he was right. In fact, another Big Ten Coach warned Izzo about Wofford. Izzo told us at his post game press conference, “Bruce Weber called me from Illinois and told me I was going to be in for a tough game.”

Clearly out-manned, Wofford played tough throughout and it wasn’t until the 12:02 mark of the second half when Kalin Lucas was called for a foul while lying on the ground that this team woke up. The Spartans went on to leave the Terriers behind and won 72-60, a final score that doesn’t give you the entire story.

Izzo was not pleased with his team’s play and as usual was blunt saying it. “I was very disappointed…we’re not playing very good and we’ve got some key guys that aren’t playing very good at all. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

I asked Delvon Roe about this team coming out flat and his answer mirrored his coach’s straightforward approach. “Great teams get up to play North Carolina and Wofford. We didn’t. If we want to be great we have to do that and you can’t blame coach Izzo for that.”

On an interesting side, Spartan G Isaiah Dahlman got the start. He was playing against his brother Noah, the star of the Terriers. As if that wasn’t enough, the Dahlman brothers’ parents, Nate and Kathy, made the trip with nearly forty of their fellow residents of Braham, Minnesota. This was the first time that Nate and Kathy had been to the Breslin and it was a special night for the family.

Izzo informed the media that Kalin Lucas and Raymar Morgan, the captains, had text Izzo earlier in the day offering to give up the start for Zeke. Izzo didn’t want others taking anything away from Dahlman’s start. “It wasn’t because his family was here and his brother was playing. We weren’t having a very good practice last night and he brought more energy and more care.”

Izzo took time to praise his guard, who hasn’t had a big impact on the score sheet, but has on the team, “Isaiah Dahlman’s footprint is that he loves being here. He will leave a big print for me.”

The January Spartan Nation Magazine will have significantly more on Isaiah and his contribution to Spartan basketball.
