Watching Niko Palazeti play football can be a thing of beauty for die-hard football fans that love the blocking and grunt work required of a FB in the Don Treadwell system. Since the arrival of Mark Dantonio and Treadwell, they have had to piece together that position.

The previous staff has no fullbacks on the roster when they arrived because their system didn’t use one. The Treadwell system does, and since they arrived they have used linebackers and lineman, but not anymore. Mark Dantonio yesterday green lighted an early Christmas present for Treadwell and they brought on their first true FB and Niko Palazeti.

Palazeti was looked at as one of the best FB’s out there and even though his offer came late the Spartans got Coach Tread a good one for his list of weapons. He has a killer instinct as a blocker. In fact a rival high school coach described him to me this morning as, “A Greg Jones type intensity on the offense. He is a bruiser.”

At 6’3” and 233#, this compact and tough young man certainly had to bring some excitement to the Duffy Daugherty Football Building when Dantonio gave the green light. This offense has done well plugging guys in who have performed well at the position, but to have one already accustomed to the nuances and play has to be a relief.

Late in the process the Spartans were more than willing to bank scholarships on what looks to be one of the deepest recruiting classes in recent memory for 2011, but in the end, they would have looked at a FB in that class and there were none as good at this point as Palazeti.

Ideally he would red shirt next season, but his play could get him on the field early. I still look for the red shirt in 2010, but his impact could be felt immediately in 2011.
