Michigan State Coach Jonathan Smith Gives Update on 'Spring Showcase'

Michigan State football will host its "Spring Showcase" on Saturday.

Michigan State's "Spring Showcase" is now just days away, and fans and players could not be more excited.

It will be the first time fans are able to witness new Spartan coach Jonathan Smith in action and an opportunity for those on the outside to see the product of what has been developed throughout spring practice.

"Looking forward to Saturday, trying to build toward that," Smith told reporters after Michigan State's spring practice on Tuesday. "We'll go pretty light on Thursday. It should be a fun day on Saturday, starting with the Izzo race, people being around and participating in that, and then, we'll go out on the field and we'll do some stuff, and I think guys are looking forward to it."

Smith went into a little detail regarding the format of Saturday's event.

"We are going to try to get some scrimmaging done -- we're not going to split up the teams -- a little bit of offense and defense. But clock's going to run, try to create a game-like atmosphere for most of it."

Smith said the coaches will be wearing headsets Saturday, but he doesn't know yet if the coordinators will go up to the box.

"We're going to try to get about four quarters in of 10 minutes, running clock," Smith said. "And offense vs. defense; we're going to let the defense start with a lead point wise and then play."

Tuesday concluded the Spartans' 13th spring practice. They will have one more before Saturday's spring camp finale.

"I think it's fun," Smith said. "These guys have been working hard; I think they want to get into the stadium and have a little bit of [the environment of] the fans around and be able to play, and so we're going to let them do that."

Michigan State fans love their football, so getting even just a glimpse of this new-look Spartan team on Saturday should be fulfilling. Smith, meanwhile, is looking forward to getting his own sampling of Spartan Nation.

"I felt that [the fans' passion] from, really, the day I arrived," Smith said. "There's passion, and people care about it deeply and they're excited about it. I get a lot of people talking [about] they'll be back or they've had season tickets for decades and all of that. So, I'm anxious to get a little taste of that on Saturday."

The Michigan State Spartan Football "Spring Showcase" will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
