Michigan State's Trey Augustine has officially signed a deal with the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, both MSU and the Wings announced on Tuesday. Augustine will report to the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins on an ATO (amateur tryout) deal for the remainder of the season. His three-year, entry-level deal with Detroit will begin with the 2026-27 season.

Augustine has been the Spartans' starting goalie for each of the last three seasons. Over that time, he has compiled a stellar 66-25-7 record, good for a .709 winning percentage. His save percentage increased each season, from .915 as a freshman to .924 as a sophomore, then to .929 as a junior.
This is the second star player that Michigan State has lost to an NHL signing in the handful of days since the team's season came to a screeching halt against Wisconsin in the regional final in the NCAA Tournament. Leading goal-scorer Porter Martone signed with the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday and debuted with his new team on Tuesday.
More on Augustine, What's Next for MSU

Augustine actually came close to playing for Michigan instead. The South Lyon, Mich. native was committed to the Wolverines for some time, but flipped his commitment to Michigan State back in September 2022.
Detroit then selected Augustine with the 41st overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, retaining the draft rights to the homegrown talent ever since.

MSU has a pretty strong plan in place for who will be between the pipes next season. The Spartans held the commitment of Joshua Ravensbergen, a former first-round pick at 30th overall by the San Jose Sharks during the 2025 NHL Draft, making him the second-highest draft pick of the season and the top goalie picked from North America. Ravensbergen is from Vancouver, Canada.
Ravensbergen on the Way
Ravensbergen is currently in the midst of the WHL (Western Hockey League) Playoffs with the Prince George Cougars. He had a save percentage of .919, a goals allowed average of 2.51, and a record of 32-13-0 this season.
Michigan State also currently has Melvin Strahl, who served as the team's backup this past season. He was picked 156th overall in the fifth round of the 2023 draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Strahl appeared in three games this season, amassing a record of 2-0-1 and a nice save percentage of .922.
