Mississippi State Softball Cruises to 16-1 Win Against Memphis

No. 17 Bulldogs score 12 runs in 15 at-bats in first inning

STARKVILLE – No. 17 Mississippi State has its conference bye week this weekend, which will give it’s top pitchers and everyday starters some rest. But not before starting the week off with a bang against Memphis.

The Bulldogs scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning before integrating younger players into the lineup of a five-inning 16-1 win.

MSU’s big first inning was highlighted by a pair of home runs by Paige Cook and Kylee Edwards. Cook would end the opening frame with four RBIs total. She struck first with one out with a home run blast to right field that scored Ella Wesolowski.

Edwards followed up two batters later with a two-run home run to left center field.

Cook had her second at-bat of the inning with two outs, but still produced runs. Her single through the middle of the defense featured a Memphis throwing error that allowed Wesolowski and Jessie Blaine to score.

Matalasi Faapito (3-1) picked up the win inside the circle for the Bulldogs, pitching the first three innings against Memphis. She allowed only two hits and struck out three batters without issuing any walks. Hosanna Lindblade pitched one inning and gave up the only run of the game to Memphis. Lexi Sosa pitched the final inning and allowed one hit and two strikeouts.

The Bulldogs will be back in action Wednesday when they host South Alabama. The game will air on SEC Network+ at 6 p.m.
