STARKVILLE, Miss. — The Mississippi State Bulldogs came into this series needing to get back on track after a series loss to Florida but failed to do so. They have struggled all season with midweek games, falling behind in the past three.

However, they have been able to bounce back from the slow start but could not recover today when they fell behind 5-1. Logan Forsythe gave up five runs in one inning of work as he walked a pair of batters and gave up two hits.

MSU lacks depth in their bullpen, and mid-week games are designed for young guys to get work and perhaps earn some innings on the weekend. However, they struggle and dig the team into a hole.

The bats have been inconsistent all year for this, and today, that trend continued as the Bulldogs had only one hit going into the ninth inning. MSU has struggled to handle nonconference pitching as they pound balls into the ground looking for home runs.

This team has tons of power, but leaning on that power leads to games like this. MSU did mount a rally in the ninth inning as the first six batters and Johnny Long drove in a pair of runs on a single.

The Bulldogs could not have gotten a better situation as Dakota Jordan and Hunter Hines were due up with the bases loaded and one out trading by only a run. However, the two sluggers struck out to end the game.

This team takes two steps forward and three steps back as they prepare for a very important series this weekend. Mississippi State is back in action Friday at 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
