Mississippi State Women's Basketball Crushes Mississippi Valley State 99-35

Bulldogs conclude their non-conference slate with dominating home victory at Humphrey Coliseum.

Mississippi State women's basketball gave up just two baskets while scoring 34 points in the first quarter and went on to completely dominate Mississippi Valley on Friday evening, 99-35. 

Senior guard Darrione Rogers recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. It was the second of her career and first by a Mississippi State player since 2000 (Cynthia Hall against Louisiana).

"[Darrione Rogers], I love that kid," head coach Sam Purcell said. "She was one of the top transfer portal players in the country. The sacrifices that she has made to be willing to come off the bench and handle it with class. Watching her feel comfortable and come out and have a triple-double tonight speaks volumes to her character and who she is as a person."

Senior guard Jerkaila Jordan led all scorers with 17 points. She and Rogers both hit four 3-pointers for the Bulldogs at Humphrey Coliseum. Center Jessika Carter had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman forward Quanirah Montague had 14 points and 13 rebounds for her first career double-double.

Mississippi State had four scores in double figures after the third quarter, when it led 77-25. It finished with six, while Mississippi Valley State had one., guard Sh'Diamond McKnight with 11 points. 

The Bulldogs added to the 34-5 lead, with a 21-9 edge in the second quarter for a 41-point lead at halftime, 55-14.

It was the ninth straight loss for the Delta Devils (1-11), including a 101-19 loss to South Carolina on Nov. 24. 

The game was Mississippi State's final tuneup prior to SEC play. The Bulldogs  (13-2) will host Vanderbilt on Jan. 4. They were coming off a 95-45 loss to Texas A&M on Dec. 18.

Mississippi State leads the series 20-2 overall and 17-0 at home. It defeated Mississippi Valley State 107-47 in head coach 's Sam Purcell's head coaching debut to open the 2022-23 season.
