Mississippi State Women's Basketball Lands a New Assistant Coach

MSU adds a former head coach to their staff.

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Anita Howard will join the Mississippi State women's basketball coaching staff. Howard will bring head coaching experience after spending the previous five seasons leading the Georgia Southern program.

GSU and she agreed to part ways following the 2023-2024 season. During her five seasons coaching the Eagles, she accumulated a 75-71 record and improved the team's win totals in her first four seasons.

During the 2022-2023 campaign, the Alabama native led her team to a 21-10 record, the most wins for the program in 20 years. She also had eight years of experience as a head coach before taking over in Statesboro.

Her first head coaching job was at Salem College. The program had only won four games the year prior to her arrival, but she led it to 17 and 21-win seasons.

She then took over at Livingstone College for two seasons, leading them to a record-breaking 23-game winning streak. Finally, she took over at Columbus State and did her best work as she appeared in two Division II titles games and an elite eight.

Adding veteran coaches to the staff is always essential, and the timing is good because MSU hosts transfer portal visitors. Sam Purcell has lost some assistant coaches already, but his first replacement is a nice hire.
