Former Mississippi State football coach Jackie Sherrill is receiving one of college football’s most prestigious honors. The American Heart Association announced Tuesday that Sherrill has been selected as the recipient of the 2027 Paul “Bear” Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his accomplishments as a coach and his impact on the sport.

The award will be formally presented Wednesday, January 27, in Houston, Texas, during the 41st annual Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards ceremony. For Mississippi State fans, the recognition celebrates a coach whose tenure helped transform the Bulldogs into a competitive force in the Southeastern Conference.

Sherrill finished his head coaching career with a 180-120-4 record across 27 seasons at Washington State, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and Mississippi State. However, his legacy in Starkville remains one of the defining chapters of his career.

Jackie Sherrill Transformed Mississippi State Football

When Sherrill arrived at Mississippi State in 1991, the Bulldogs were searching for a new direction. The program had not recorded a winning season since 1986, and competing consistently in the SEC was a significant challenge.

Sherrill helped change that trajectory.

During his tenure, he guided Mississippi State to six bowl appearances, an SEC Western Division championship in 1998 and a top-15 national finish in 1999. His 75 victories remain the most by any head coach in Mississippi State football history.

The 1998 season stands out as a landmark moment. Mississippi State won the SEC West and reached the SEC Championship Game, establishing itself among the conference's strongest programs.

Sherrill's accomplishments helped raise expectations for Bulldogs football and gave the program a foundation for future success. His 75 wins remain a lasting reminder of his influence on Mississippi State athletics.

Sherrill’s Connection to Bear Bryant Makes the Honor Special

The award carries additional significance because of Sherrill's personal connection to the legendary coach it honors.

Born in Duncan, Oklahoma, Sherrill played for Paul “Bear” Bryant at the University of Alabama from 1962 through 1965. During that time, he was part of two national championship teams before later serving as a graduate assistant under Bryant.

That experience helped shape Sherrill's coaching career and his approach to developing players and building competitive programs.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes more than wins and championships. Its criteria include integrity, leadership, dedication to developing young people and excellence in teaching football.

Sherrill's selection reflects a career that spanned multiple programs and helped influence college football over several decades.

What the Bear Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award Represents

Now in its 28th year, the Lifetime Achievement Award is one of five honors presented during the annual Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards ceremony. The National Sports Media Association votes on the honor using criteria established by the Bryant family.

The ceremony also supports the American Heart Association by raising funds and awareness for lifesaving research and cardiovascular health.

Jackie Sherrill's selection for the 2027 Bear Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award is a fitting recognition of a coaching career defined by sustained success and program-building. His 75 victories, SEC West title and lasting impact in Starkville ensure his place in Mississippi State football history.
