Mizzou Mailbag: Fans React to Mark Mitchell's Commitment to Kentucky

Former Missouri forward Mark Mitchell broke the hearts of many Tiger faithfuls over the weekend, officially ending his time with the Tigers by committing to Kentucky basketball. Mitchell won his lawsuit in Kentucky on Friday, being granted a fifth season of eligibility and access to the transfer portal, then committed to Kentucky basketball on Saturday.

Mitchell's decision riled up fans on social media, revealing some major reactions on either side of the pendulum.

In his last appearance at Mizzou Arena, Mitchell spoke through tears of what his time at Missouri meant to him. In response, many fans referred to Mitchell as a true son, an understandable title to the man who led Missouri in scoring en route to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments immediately after the Tigers' winless Southeastern Conference season.

When Mitchell regained his eligibility, Missouri already had a full 15-man roster, throwing a giant wrench into Mitchell's potential return. A few weeks after entering the transfer portal, Mitchell comitted to Kentucky.

A day before that, I put out a poll to see how fans would react to Mitchell's return, which for now, will be when Kentucky comes to Mizzou Arena on Jan. 9. Here's how the near-400 votes were split.

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure there's another player in the nation that would get a standing ovation from 16% of a crowd and livid boos from another 36% of the same crowd. The split reaction is understandable, as Mitchell's departure is rather unprecedented and certainly didn't end on bad terms, at least to the public eye.

The leading portion being "Upset but understand" also makes sense — it's not necessarily Mitchell's fault and it certainly didn't seem like leaving Missouri for another college team was his first choice. Only after Mitchell tried his hand at the NBA did he discover a return to college was in the cards. Unlike Missouri, Kentucky was an SEC squad with an open roster spot this late into the offseason, and per reports, had the funds to offer Mitchell a monster salary for the upcoming season. Top-prize players of Mitchell's caliber can make life-changing money in the new landscape of college basketball.

It's also important to remember that social media isn't all-encompassing of the population, and Mitchell's eventual reception at Mizzou Arena could play out far differently than the poll and the rest of social media suggests. There's also over four months between now and Mitchell's return — plenty of time for comments to be said and portions of the transfer story to be revealed.
