It's Official: Notre Dame Hires Micah Shrewsberry As Its New Head Basketball Coach

Notre Dame officially announced former Penn State head coach as the new man in charge for the Irish

Notre Dame has made it official and announced that Micah Shrewsberry will be the program's next head basketball coach.

"We are so excited to have Coach (Shrewsberry) join the Notre Dame family,” athletics director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement. “Throughout this process, it reaffirmed for me that this job was among the best in the country as we had many great candidates express interest.”

"During our two month process, we weekly reviewed our candidate pool and each week he (Micah) stayed at the top of our list due to his fit at the University and his commitment to the student-athlete experience. Not only do his personal & family values align with the University, but his dedication to the development of each member of his program as well.”

Shrewsberry is an Indiana native that has spent over half of his coaching career in the state of Indiana, including a stint as head coach at the University of Indiana-South Bend.

"I’m very excited to be joining the University of Notre Dame family,” Shrewsberry said. “The combination of top notch academics, plus a long storied history of success on the basketball court, made this a very attractive job for me. The power of the Notre Dame brand, and the passionate alumni family, will allow us to recruit the brightest student-athletes from coast to coast. I can’t wait to get to campus and begin connecting with the students, faculty and staff which make this place special.”

Shrewsberry spent the last two seasons at Penn State, compiling a 37-31 record. This past season Shrewsberry led the Nittany Lions to a 23-14 record and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It marked the first time since 2011 that Penn State made it to the tournament. Penn State's 76-59 win over Texas A&M marked the first Penn State tournament victory since 2001.

The Indianapolis native spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Purdue. It was his second stint as an assistant under Boilermaker head coach Matt Painter (2011-13).

Shrewsberry also spent 10 seasons working with Brad Stevens. He spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Butler (2007-11) and then six seasons alongside Stevens with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics twice made the Eastern Conference Finals with Shrewsberry on staff.

At Butler, Shrewsberry was part of the Bulldog program that made back-to-back runs to the national championship game. Butler lost to Duke in the title game in 2010 and UConn in the title game in 2011.
