Notre Dame Men, Women Draw ACC/SEC Basketball Challenge Opponents

In this story:
Make way for the ACC/SEC Challenge. After a decade of play, the ACC/Big Ten Challenge is a thing of the past and the new ACC vs SEC arrangement will bring new opportunities for both the Notre Dame men’s and women’s basketball teams this season.
The conferences announced matchups, dates and times on Wednesday for the all-new ACC/SEC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Challenge for the upcoming 2023-2024 season.
First-year head coach Micah Shrewsberry’s Irish men’s team drew the South Carolina Gamecocks in the new event. The Fighting Irish will travel to Columbia, SC on Nov. 28 for a 7 pm Eastern Time tipoff at Colonial Life Arena. The two programs have met 15 times previously, but their last meeting was in 1984. Notre Dame holds a 10-5 all-time advantage, including a 4-3 mark at South Carolina.
Niele Ivey’s women drew a more familiar foe in Tennessee. That game will be played on Nov. 29 at 5 pm ET at Thompson-Boling arena in Knoxville, Tenn. It will mark the 31st all-time meeting between the two women’s basketball powers.
The Irish are just 8-22 against the Lady Vols, but they have won eight of the last 10 meetings. The most recent was a 74-63 Tennessee win at Purcell Pavilion on Nov. 11, 2019. Notre Dame is 3-9 all-time in Knoxville, where they won 77-62 in their last trip on Jan. 25, 2019.
Tennessee is one of two SEC teams the Notre Dame women are slated to play in the upcoming season. They will also open the 2023-24 campaign against South Carolina on Nov. 6 in Paris, France.
