Benjamin Morrison Named College Football's No. 4 Cornerback For 2023
Notre Dame sophomore cornerback Benjamin Morrison is looking to build on a brilliant freshman season, which is earning him a lot of preseason accolades. In its College Football National 2023 Preview magazine, Lindy's Sports ranked Morrison as the fourth best returning cornerback in college football.
Morrison had a breakout rookie season for Notre Dame, and it started immediately. He was outstanding in the season opening loss to Ohio State, and by the fourth game of the season he had earned a starting role. Morrison's national breakout came in Notre Dame's 35-14 November win over Clemson. In that game he picked off a pair of passes. The first set up a score by the Irish offense, and the second he returned 96 yards for a touchdown of his own.
Two weeks later, Morrison picked off Boston College quarterback Emmett Morehead three times in a 44-0 victory.
Morrison finished the season with 33 tackles, four pass break ups and six interceptions, which tied for third nationally. According to Pro Football Focus, Morrison held opponents to just a 43.1% completion rate and gave up just 296 receiving yards on the season.
Lindy's Sports named Morrison to its preseason second team All-American squad. He is expected to combine with senior Cam Hart to form one of the best cornerback tandems in college football this season.
Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry ranked as the nation's No. 1 cornerback on the Lindy's list. He was followed by Iowa corner Cooper DeJean, Ohio State corner Denzel Brook and then Morrison. Another Notre Dame opponent had a corner in the cornerback rankings. That would be NC State junior Ayden White, who ranked No. 8 on the cornerback list.
