Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman Set For Big Opportunity At 2024 NFL Scouting Combine

In this story:
When Sam Hartman transferred to Notre Dame before the 2023 season, there were a lot of expectations for what he could accomplish in his lone season in South Bend. That stint didn’t quite live up to expectations, although Hartman was still a good player who did a lot for the Irish program. In that lone season with Notre Dame, Hartman threw for 2,689 yards and 24 touchdowns.
In his entire career, Hartman ended as one of the prolific passers in college football history. During his six year college career, the former Wake Forest star threw for an incredible 15,656 yards and 134 touchdowns through the air. Hartman also scored another 20 touchdowns on the ground.
After a good but unspectacular final season, Hartman needs to have a tremendous draft process. It got started off on solid footing with his performance at the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl a few weeks ago. Hartman had a really solid all-around week of practice down in Mobile, Alabama. The week didn’t end great with an awful performance in the game but the scouts saw everything they needed during practice, which is most important in that setting.
Hartman is now set to participate at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, which is the next step in this job interview. It brings an interesting opportunity for a player who most really impress NFL evaluators with his charisma, football IQ and ability as a leader:
CURRENT PROJECTION
As of today, Hartman is viewed as a late round player, who has a chance to be drafted somewhere in the sixth or seventh round. He is mostly viewed as a potential backup quarterback on the next level, which means his sticking point will have to be dependability and solid processing. Those are things that he will be tested on this draft process, not as much pure physical tools.
WHAT’S ON THE LINE AT THE COMBINE?
People will always hyper focus on Combine testing, and it’s understandable. For quarterbacks, and especially those who project as backups, the testing isn’t nearly as important. The Combine does provide different layers that aren’t talked about as much: including medical checks and team interviews.
The latter is going to be especially important. As a quarterback, you are a leader whether you are suited to be or not. It is the most important position in all of sports, and a lot of pressure is put on that position. Hartman must sell himself to NFL decision makers in those meetings. They are going to ask hard questions, and he must have the appropriate answers.
Here are some projected testing numbers for Hartman, although it won’t be overly important.
40-Yard Dash: 4.85 seconds
Vertical Jump: 32 inches
Broad Jump: 9 feet, 2 inches
3-Cone Drill: 4.2 seconds
Short Shuttle: 6.8 seconds
NEXT STEP
The next several weeks will be about Hartman continuing to impress those decision makers as a person and leader. He will meet with teams at the Pro Day, as well as the Top 30 visits prior to the 2024 NFL Draft in April. A team has to believe in him, both as a teammate, as a player and as a member of their organization.
