Notre Dame Women's Basketball To Face Illinois In Citi Shamrock Classic

Notre Dame women’s basketball will play Illinois in the second annual Citi Shamrock Classic. The two midwestern teams will face off on Nov.18 in the nation’s capital inside the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C.

"We are so excited to participate in the second annual Citi Shamrock Classic after last year's great success," Fighting Irish Head Coach Niele Ivey said in a press release. "Washington D.C. was and continues to be the starting point of so many initiatives promoting equality across our country. There is no better place to play a game like this — one that is bigger than basketball — and we cannot wait to face Illinois in another historic matchup on NBC and Peacock."

Entertainment & Sports Arena is the home of the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. The game will tip-off at 1:00 pm ET and will be televised on NBC. The game will also lead into Notre Dame football's home game with Wake Forest at 3:30 p.m.

"We're looking forward to presenting the Citi Shamrock Classic for a second consecutive year and continuing to showcase the Notre Dame women's basketball program and the excitement of women's sports to a national audience on NBC and Peacock," said Gary Quinn, Vice President, Programming, NBC Sports. "With Notre Dame football's final home game of the season later that day on NBC and Peacock, NBC Sports will present a must-see day for Notre Dame fans across the country."

The Fighting Irish beat California 90-79 in St. Louis last year in the inaugural Citi Shamrock Classic. It was also the first ever women’s basketball game televised on NBC.

Notre Dame and Illinois have met just five times previously, with the last meeting taking place in 1999. The Irish are just 1-4 against the Illini. The Irish were regulars in Washington, D.C. when they were members of the Big East from 1995-2013. They have not played there since 2012.
