Tyler Buchner is now a former Notre Dame quarterback, with the rising junior announcing that he plans to transfer to Alabama, where he will be reunited with former Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.

Buchner announced his decision to transfer shortly after Notre Dame's spring game after it became obvious that Sam Hartman would win the starting quarterback battle with the Fighting Irish. According to sources, Buchner was down to leaving for Alabama or returning to Notre Dame, and he chose to head to Tuscaloosa.

The California native went into the 2022 season as Notre Dame's starting quarterback but went down with a regular season-ending injury in the second game. He didn't return until the Gator Bowl, where he led the Irish to a 45-38 victory. In that game Buchner threw three interceptions, but also had plenty of brilliant moments, which earned him MVP honors. In that contest Buchner passed for 273 yards, rushed for 61 yards and racked up five total touchdowns.

Rees went out this offseason and landed former Wake Forest star quarterback Sam Hartman before departing for Alabama. Now, that move has sent Buchner to Tuscaloosa to be reunited with Rees. Buchner will compete with former five-star quarterback Ty Simpson and junior Jalen Milroe for the starting job.

Buchner passed for 651 yards and rushed for 123 yards while accounting for seven touchdowns in just three games. Simpson threw just five passes last season, but Milroe did earn a spot start against Texas A&M after Bryce Young was injured against Arkansas. In that game Milroe passed for 111 yards, rushed for 83 yards and accounted for three scores in a 24-20 Crimson Tide victory.

Notre Dame's quarterback battle now shifts to who will backup Hartman, with rising sophomore Steve Angeli and freshman Kenny Minchey set to duke it out during the summer and into fall camp. Hartman is now the unquestioned starter and leader of the Notre Dame offense.
