Safeties Coach Chris O'Leary To Stay At Notre Dame

Irish Breakdown has learned that safeties coach Chris O'Leary is staying at Notre Dame after getting interest from NFL teams

Notre Dame got a double dose of good news today on the coaching front, as Irish Breakdown has learned that safeties coach Chris O'Leary plans to remain at Notre Dame despite getting interest from NFL teams.

O'Leary, wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey, running backs coach Deland McCullough and special teams coordinator Brian Mason all received interest from NFL teams this offseason. Mason left for the Colts, but McCullough and Stuckey have already turned down NFL overtures, and now so has O'Leary.

The Terre Haute, Ind. native just completed his second full season as the safeties coach for the Fighting Irish. Despite being very young, O'Leary has quickly developed into a quality position coach, helping develop first round pick and Irish All-American Kyle Hamilton, and also being very involved with the coaching and development of another All-American and Butkus Award winner Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.

Prior to his tenure at Notre Dame, O'Leary had only coached as a full-time assistant for one season, and that was at Division II Florida Tech. During his three seasons as an analyst (2018-19) and a graduate assistant (2020) at Notre Dame, O'Leary impressed the Irish staff enough to earn a full-time promotion to safeties coach, and he's shined in that role as an on-field coach.

O'Leary has done quite well taking Ramon Henderson (cornerback) and Xavier Watts (wide receiver), who were playing other positions, and developing them quickly as safeties. By season's end in 2022 that pair was the most productive part of the Irish safety depth chart.

Keeping O'Leary, who is at the age where his coaching chops can make more significant jumps than a more seasoned coach, is a big plus for Freeman this offseason.

His first full season as a recruiter didn't go as planned, but O'Leary bounced back by helping land a quality three man group that included Brandyn Hillman, Adon Shuler and Ben Minich.
