Big Time Safety Brauntae Johnson Commits To Notre Dame

In this story:
Notre Dame has dipped into its backyard for a big time commitment, with the Fighting Irish landing Fort Wayne (Ind.) North Side safety Brauntae Johnson. Getting Johnson out of their backyard was certainly important for Notre Dame, but this is a talented athlete that plays a major position of need for the Irish.
The 6-3, 170-pound athlete picked Notre Dame over Penn State, Tennessee, Miami (Fla.), Missouri, Colorado, Purdue, Louisville, Michigan State and Cincinnati.
Notre Dame came into the 2024 recruiting cycle with safety being one of the biggest needs. Johnson was a prospect the Irish staff has been quite high on ever since he put together a dominant performance in last year's Irish Invasion camp. Not only did the Irish need numbers, they needed impact talent. Johnson joins Arizona safety Kennedy Urlacher and Ohio safety Taebron Bennie-Powell, so landing the in-state standout helps Notre Dame meet its numbers needs.
Landing Johnson goes beyond just meeting a numbers need, he gives Notre Dame a much-needed high-level talent on the back end of the defense.
Johnson has played more wide receiver during his North Side career, and he could certainly play that position in college, but Notre Dame recruited him at safety. Johnson has exceptional length for the position, and his combination of easy movement skills and speed allow him to cover a lot of ground as a safety. As he gains more experience at the position he could provide the defense with the kind of rangy, impactful deep middle safety that it wants and needs.
What Johnson gives Notre Dame is a player with the potential to become a difference maker at a position where they simply lack enough play makers.
As a junior, Johnson hauled in 69 passes for 1,081 yards and 16 touchdowns. He has caught 26 touchdown passes already in his career and enters his final high school season with 1,974 career receiving yards. Johnson also has 53 career tackles as a safety.
A consensus four-star recruit, Johnson is ranked as the nation's No. 58 overall player according to Rivals, and is also ranked as the No. 5 athlete in the country.
Johnson earned scholarship offers from the schools mentioned above as well as Wisconsin, Auburn, Washington, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa State and Kansas.
