The running back position for Notre Dame has become an embarrassment of riches in recent years. Heading into the 2023 college season, the Irish will be six deep once 2023 signee Jeremiyah Love makes his way to South Bend this summer.

That amount of depth will only continue to grow with the recruiting efforts of Deland McCullough and the rest of the offensive staff. They have already managed to grab a commitment from Hannibal (Mo.) High School standout Aneyas Williams, who is considered the No. 1 all-purpose back in the 2024 recruiting class according to Rivals.

What makes the running back room so special is not one player, or even two. This group can send a flurry of talented runners at a defense, all with different skill sets and strengths to create a ton of plays. The Notre Dame staff has made it known that they would like to add a second running back to the 2024 group to complement Williams.

A player to keep a close eye on is Lufkin (Texas) High School star runner Kedren Young, who is one of the very talented running backs on the Irish board. Offered in late January by the Irish, Young is a player that the staff is extremely high on. He brings a bruising style that does have shades of current Notre Dame star Audric Estime but does bring even more big play potential with his long speed.

Young is considered as a consensus four-star recruit by every major recruiting platform. He is rated as the No. 93 overall player and the No. 8 running back in the 2024 recruiting class according to the On3 ranking. That particular platform also has Young pegged as the No. 20 player in the talent rich state of Texas.

The Texas native is garnering interest from several big time programs. Some of his notable offers include the Fighting Irish, Michigan, Miami, Texas, TCU, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Texas Tech, Missouri, Boston College, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Arizona, and Georgia Tech among others.

The 5-11, 210-pound runner was a tough task for opposing defenses as a junior. Young rushed for 1,751 yards and 19 touchdowns on 237 carries, an average of seven yards per carry. He also hauled in another nine receptions for 96 yards on the season.

It’s easy to see on film what the Irish staff values so heavily since he has gotten on to their radar. His combination of physicality, lower body explosiveness and no nonsense running style brings an impressive blend to the table as a power back. It could potentially bring the perfect complement to Williams, who is much more of a space runner with his ability to catch the football out of the backfield and create some chunk plays.

Young would also be yet another victory for the Irish staff in the state of Texas, a territory that they have made a priority since Marcus Freeman took over as the head coach. After four massive commitments in the 2023 class, which was more than the previous five recruiting cycles for Notre Dame, the staff is hoping that the talented runner could join cornerback commit Leonard Moore.

The priority for the Notre Dame staff is to get Young on campus the next couple of months, a place that he has never been. We are told that there is some legitimate interest from his side but so far he is still finalizing visits.
