Notre Dame just put together a very good safety group in the 2023 recruiting class, closing on standouts Adon Shuler, Ben Minich and Brandyn Hillman. It wasn’t a perfect cycle at the position and the staff will need to land some elite talent in 2024. There may be no higher upside on the safety board currently than Swainsboro (Ga.) High School star Demello Jones, who included the Irish among his Top Ten school list today.

Jones’ list included the Fighting Irish, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Miami, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

The 6-1, 175-pound athlete is a two-way star for Swainsboro. On offense, he led the team with 1,279 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns on just 122 carries. That is a 10.5 yard per carry average on top of another 384 yards and seven touchdowns through the air on 14 receptions (27.4 yards per reception).

Jones also recorded 44 total tackles and six pass breakups on defense. He also chipped in with tackles for loss and forced fumble.

After some suspicious recruiting rankings for Jones early on, some of the major recruiting platforms have begun giving him the recognition he deserves. Both 247Sports and Rivals now have him rated as a four-star recruit. The latter has him pegged as the No. 112 overall player and No. 8 wide receiver in the 2024 recruiting class.

Aside from his ten finalists, Jones also boasts a flurry of other impressive offers. Some of the notable programs include Florida, Florida State, Texas A&M, Auburn, Michigan State, Ole Miss, NC State and Colorado among others.

Jones also has Notre Dame ties. His uncle John “Deke” Cooper should be a name that rings some bells to Irish fans and supporters.

Cooper was a three year letter winner for the Irish from 1996-99. During that span, he intercepted six passes, recorded 203 total tackles, seven forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.

He would then parlay that success into a six-year NFL career after coming out of Notre Dame as an undrafted free agent, spending time with the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers before ending his career following the 2007 season. In total, Cooper recorded 218 total tackles and intercepted six passes in his career.

Jones has yet to make the trip to South Bend. He is working on finalizing a date to visit this spring or summer.
