2024 Safety Paul Mencke Jr. Excited To Learn More About Notre Dame

An extremely interesting safety was added to the recruiting board for Notre Dame when an offer was extended to Schertz (Texas) Samuel Clemens standout Paul Mencke Jr. back in the end of March. The Texas native quickly set up a visit to Notre Dame for Friday and Saturday.

Mencke has been incredibly busy on the visit trail over the last couple of weeks. That includes the upcoming trip to Notre Dame, which will be his first visit to campus.

“Recruiting for me has been fun,” Mencke said. “I’m close to my friends with my offers and even though I’m a little behind, I like to think of the quality or quantity the schools that have offered are amazing places academically and athletically. I’ve visited Duke, Houston and now I was in Oakland this past weekend to check out Stanford.”

As for Notre Dame, Mencke doesn’t fully know what to expect. He is just excited to explore and see everything that the program has to offer.

“There really is no expectation for how they are going to treat me because how they treat you is usually a direct correlation to how high you are on their board,” he explained. “Campus wise I expect it to be very rustic and medieval because of the Catholic theme, and I want to see the big chapel on campus.”

Since offering Mencke, and even before, the Irish staff has been developing a deeper relationship with the Texas native. So far, the staff has impressed him. Mencke hopes that will continue during this initial visit.

“It’s been amazing from personal experience,” he said. “I know the fans love the team. I’ve had a run in with one at a convention and man it was kind of wild how much they love that school.

“From a coach and player standpoint it’s been cool they hit me up every week or so,” Mencke continued. “Coach (Marcus) Freeman has been hitting me up so that means a lot because not every recruit gets that treatment. I like the potential fit. I mean a safety just like me came out of there in Kyle Hamilton and I feel like I could potentially have the same role as him.”

Mencke is considered a near consensus three-star recruit. The exception is On3, who has him pegged as a four-star recruit. On that ranking, he currently sits as the No. 179 overall player and No. 19 safety in the 2024 recruiting class. He is also ranked as the No. 38 player in Texas, a state that Notre Dame has made a priority since Marcus Freeman took over.

Some of his notable scholarship offers thus far include the Fighting Irish, Washington, Stanford, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Washington State, Iowa State, Arizona State, Duke and Kansas among others.

As a junior, Mencke was a playmaker for Samuel Clemens. He collected 67 total tackles and three interceptions for the squad despite missing one game. The 6-2, 180-pound athlete also was a prominent performer at wide receiver.
