Notre Dame Offensive Tackle Target Matty Augustine Has Loads Of Potential

In this story:
Since camping at Notre Dame this off-season, 2025 Milford (Conn.) Brunswick School offensive tackle Matty Augustine has quickly become a priority player for the Irish staff. On film, it’s pretty easy to see. He’s a long and athletic kid, who although is very raw, has some substantial upside.
After speaking with Brunswick Head Coach Wayne McGillicuddy, the upside is even more apparent. Augustine is an incredibly interesting offensive tackle recruit, who brings an intriguing background to the table.
"Matty is a very intriguing player and in a very good way,” McGillicuddy told Irish Breakdown. "When I came here as an offensive coordinator in 2020, he was a basketball first kid. I was able to convince him to come out and play football.
"At that point, all he could do was pass set,” he continued. “With everything going on, we could barely do anything. He was just hitting sleds and trying to stay engaged. It was a struggle and honestly, I don’t blame him for not really enjoying it because it was so limited.”
The Brunswick coaching staff, through adversity, didn’t give up on Augustine. They understood just how good he could be, and they quickly wanted to make him realize it.
"I told Matty to trust the process and stick with it,” said McGillicuddy. "If he did, he would be able to go anywhere he wanted to. During his first sophomore year, he was 220 pounds or maybe 230 pounds. We were playing against a team that ran a bear front, so I told him that he was going to play. All he had to do was use his length and keep pass rushers outside of him. That was the first step.”
Luckily for Augustine, he did buy in. Even luckier for him, Brunswick is one of the better high schools when it comes to developing college offensive lineman.
Augustine owes a lot to the coaches, and a former teammate, to develop into the player he is today. That development has been a collaborative effort by everyone involved.
"We have done a good job as a program putting out Division One offensive lineman,” explained McGillicuddy. "We have had five players signed to play major college football the last two years, including Myles Walker who is at Ohio State now.
"When Myles was making his rise, schools would come to watch some field work at our home field,” he added. “Myles really took Matty under his wing and showed him what he needed to do. Matty really attacked the weight room. He was around 245 and 250 pounds last season, which was all good weight.”
Now this off-season, after reclassifying from a 2024 to a 2025 recruit, Augustine has even taken it to another level. He has quickly gone from a toolsy upside pick to an offensive lineman who has been courted by some of the top schools in the country. Augustine’s work ethic deserves a lot of the credit.
"This off-season he has really fallen in love with the weight room,” he said. "Last week, he weighed in at about 290 pounds at Alabama. That’s a testament to his work ethic, which is through the roof. I was just driving around near the school yesterday and he’s out there with five other offensive lineman going through our offensive line individual drills.
"He’s also measured around 6-7.5 the last two visits he’s been on,” McGillicuddy said. "Matty also understands what he needs to do. He knows that his film needs to take the next step. It’s impossible to tell just how good Matty can be. I’m not sure he has a ceiling.”
There is a clear reason why Notre Dame is prioritizing Augustine. It’s an upside play but with development, the Connecticut native has upside that almost can’t be measured.
Augustine has been attracting the attention of several top programs so far in the process. Some of the premier offers that Augustine holds so far includes the Fighting Irish, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, Penn State, Miami, Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Michigan State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Duke and Vanderbilt amongst others.
The 6-7, 260-pound offensive tackle was originally a member of the 2024 class. A younger kid for his age, he chose to reclassify to 2025. Augustine is now one of the more intriguing members of a very deep offensive tackle board for the Irish.
