On3 Continues Odd Rankings For Notre Dame Recruits

Notre Dame players moved around in the final rankings from On3

On3 has released its final rankings for the 2024 class, and as expected there is some really good for Notre Dame, and other rankings that are just patently absurd.

Let's start with the good. Notre Dame had six players in the final Top 100 from On3, including Boston (Mass.) Catholic Memorial offensive tackle Guerby Lambert, who ranked as 5-star recruit and the No. 18 player in the nation. Charlotte (N.C.) Christian defensive end Bryce Young ranked No. 42 nationally, which was up eight spots from the last ranking.

Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard South wide receiver Cam Williams ranks No. 64 nationally, but he inexplicably fell 39 spots from where he was ranked after the 2023 season ended. I'm sure there is some justification On3 will have for this, but it will likely be lame and show how flawed their rankings system is at this point.

Lufkin (Texas) High School running back Kedren Young ranks as the No. 79 player in the country, so it's good that On3 recognizes his talent. They also jumped Roswell (Ga.) High School offensive tackle Anthonie Knapp up 47 spots, putting him at No. 97 in the country. Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa also jumped way up, going from No. 167 overall to No. 83 overall. I don't know why it took an all-star game to figure out he's a Top 100 player, but at least they finally figured it out.

Their ranking of Lambert, Young, Knapp and Micah Gilbert (who ranks No. 175) are reasons I have argued On3 doesn't have any kind of anti-Notre Dame bias, which is often asserted in these discussions. That's not their issue, the issue is overall just an incredibly flawed rankings system that has far too much poor evaluation involved.

Dropping Saline (Mich.) High School quarterback CJ Carr from No. 209 to No. 231 is arguably the most egregious mistake On3 made, and that's being kind. I'm trying to maintain some semblance of professionalism when discussing these rankings, but this one makes it hard to do. It was bad enough that Carr was ranked No. 209, but to then drop him 22 more spots is ridiculous. I'm not sure what Carr did to upset the folks at On3, but this ranking for Carr is absurd.

Rounding out the Top 300 players for Notre Dame is Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward defensive end Loghan Thomas, who fell 75 spots to No. 243 overall despite having a monster senior season. Apparently there was something they just realized about Thomas that they didn't see after watching him in high school for four years that necessitated a drop of just under 100 spots. I think you're picking up the sarcasm here, right?

Hamilton (Ind.) Southeastern offensive tackle Styles Prescod ranked No. 250 overall, which was a drop of 36 spots.

If the Carr ranking wasn't bad enough, On3 dropped Fort Wayne (Ind.) North Side safety Brauntae Johnson down to a 3-star. Yes, the player that IB and Rivals both rank as a Top 100 recruit, and who both 247Sports and ESPN rank as Top 300 recruit, fell all the way down to a 3-star. Linebacker Bodie Kahoun and cornerback Leonard Moore are also still ranked as 3-star players, which in my view are wildly off base.

Overall, there is some good in this ranking for Notre Dame, but it's just hard to take On3's rankings seriously. It seems in their attempt to stand out they are willing to do some just absurd and ridiculous rankings and create some bizarre rankings systems that don't really make sense. Their credibility from a rankings standpoint, to me, is basically dead at this point. My focus here is on Notre Dame, but I could point out far, far more egregious rankings that impact non-Notre Dame prospects as well that tell the same story.
