Notre Dame Safety Target Jordan Young Can Do It All

In this story:
The 2025 recruiting class is littered with talented safeties of all sizes and skill sets. On surface level it looks like arguably the deepest group in the cycle, with plenty of impact players.
Arguably the top talent on the board is Monroe (N.C.) High School athlete Jordan Young, who is a dominant fixture on both sides of the football. According to Monroe Head Coach Johnny Sowell, Young has a chance to be one of the very best to ever do it at the school.
"Jordan is going to continue to grow,” Coach Sowell told Irish Breakdown. "I’ve been coaching now for 38 years and we have had some great players come through.
"We still have one playing in the NFL in Jamison Crowder,” he continued. "Jordan has a chance to be one of the best to ever play here. He’s a special talent who works hard.”
The talent is at such a high level for Young, that he could potentially excel on either side of the football. Where Young sees himself could be an important ingredient to finding his home in the end.
"He’s going to continue to grow over the next two years,” he said. "There are some schools who like him on offense and some that like him on defense. In the end, it’s going to be about what position he feels most comfortable playing.”
Young is being pursued by some of the top programs in college football right now. That type of interest, however, isn’t overwhelming him. His support system has been big in managing the chaos.
"Jordan has a tremendous support system,” Young explained. "It starts at home. His mother is a coach so she understands the grind of being a student athlete. He has been taught what to say, and when to say it. It has always been instilled in him. Jordan is taught how to stay humble and be competitive. We are just there to reiterate what he’s being talked about and have a family environment.”
It also doesn’t hurt that Coach Sowell has been through this process before. He has been a valuable resource as well.
"I’ve been at this for a long time,” he said. "I know when things get too hot and I’m not afraid to step in and help where I need to. Jordan knows that.”
Outside of the recruiting chaos, Young and his Monroe teammates are preparing for a 2023 season with big expectations. The 2022 version went 12-2, including a playoff berth, but is out for some playoff revenge.
Sowell has big expectations for what they could accomplish this season, with a veteran team returning.
"We’re going to be solid at the skill positions,” said Sowell. "We also have three starting offensive lineman returning so we expect to be able to make some big plays. There is a nice core coming back. Our starting running back did go down with an injury and won’t be able to play this season, but luckily we are deep there.”
Monroe will of course be led by Young, who has quickly become a priority for Notre Dame. One of the outstanding safeties in the country already, expect a tremendous junior season ahead.
Young is considered a four-star recruit by every major recruiting platform currently. He ranks highest by On3, who has him pegged as the No. 15 overall player and No. 1 safety in the 2025 recruiting class. 247Sports also has Young rated as their top safety in the country.
The 6-0, 180-pound athlete is a two-way star for Monroe as both a safety and wide receiver. On the defensive side of the football, he is coming off of a dominant performance as a sophomore. He finished that campaign with 41 total tackles, eight interceptions and three pass breakups. Young returned those eight interceptions for 212 yards and scored a touchdown. The North Carolina standout also blocked two punts on the season.
On offense, Young was equally as impactful. He led the squad with 1,010 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns on just 52 receptions. That is an average of 19.4 yards per reception, once again illustrating his big play potential.
