It was a tremendous start to the weekend when Fort Wayne (Ind.) North Side athlete Brauntae Johnson committed to Notre Dame over finalists Tennessee and Purdue. The talented two-way, and two-sport star, brings some clarity to the safety position for the 2024 class.

In a previous interview, North Side head coach Ben Johnson Jr. gave a little insight into what makes “Tae Tae” so special. In preparation for his big day, Coach Johnson also wanted to talk a little bit more about Notre Dame, the talented safety’s fit and his long term upside.

Breaking news: Brauntae is a tremendous fit.

"The thing about (Brauntae) is that you can never count him out,” Johnson said. “The kid is a survivor. Whatever he needs to do to be successful, he will do it. He consistently takes care of businesses and never lets setbacks define him.”

The majority of the conversation centered around Johnson, the person, and not as much about the football player. It doesn’t take a great eye to see how talented he is on the football field but off of it, Johnson also has a chance to excel.

"From a work ethic perspective, you’ll never have to worry about Brauntae,” Johnson said. "He’s laser focused on his craft. Football, basketball, school work, he’s always busy. The kid never stops.

"Brauntae isn’t just an athlete,” he continued. “He understands what his athleticism can provide him. An education from the University of Notre Dame doesn’t have a value. He has a chance to set himself up for the rest of his life.”

This isn’t the first time that Coach Johnson has worked with a future Irish player. At one time, he was a coach for Jaylon Smith when he was coming out of Bishop Luers. Like Smith, Johnson brings a tremendous upside as an athlete to the next level.

“There’s no limit to how good Brauntae can be,” Johnson explained. "Whether it is at wide receiver or at safety, his potential is limitless. He’s fast, he’s long, he’s just a playmaker.

“Special is the word that comes to mind,” he added. "When you have that type of God given ability, combined with his competitiveness, you have something different. Brauntae is the type of player who can go the distance.”

From a personal perspective, as well as athletically, Johnson seems like a really good fit. Both Johnson and Notre Dame can provide so much to one another.

"It’s a match made in Heaven,” he said. "I’m excited to see all he accomplishes in South Bend. They’re building something special under Coach (Marcus) Freeman.”

Johnson is a two-sport star for North Side, thriving on the basketball court on top of his work on the football field. As a wide receiver and defensive back, Johnson made a tremendous impact as a junior. He led the team with 1,081 yards and 16 touchdowns on 69 receptions. That was good enough for 15.7 yards per reception and 108.1 receiving yards per game.

On defense, Johnson collected 23 total tackles and several pass breakups. He did all that while also making an impact on special teams.

While his football resume is impressive enough, Johnson is also a tremendous performer on the basketball court. As a junior, he averaged 20.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.6 steals per game. In total, he has scored 1,180 points during his career.

The 6-3, 170-pound athlete is considered a consensus four-star recruit across every major recruiting platform. Johnson ranks highest on the Rivals ranking, where he is currently pegged as the No. 58 overall player and No. 5 athlete in the 2024 recruiting class.
