Ohio State Buckeyes 2023 Spring Game - Scarlet vs. Gray: How to Watch

As the Buckeyes prepare for the upcoming campaign, which kicks off on Sept. 2 against Indiana, it's time for coach Ryan Day to evaluate players and coaches in the annual spring game.

Ryan Day finally held his press conference discussing exactly what the spring game would be this season. Speculation has been that it may be the same as last season with offense vs. defense with a modified points system.

Day was worried about depth at some positions coming in, namely defensive end, and wasn't sure if he could do a straight "Scarlet vs. Gray" scrimmage game because he wants the ability to rotate guys in and out.

In the long run, Day decided offense vs. defense is the way to go. They will still play four quarters but possibly with a running clock in the fourth just to move things along.

The game format will be similar to last year with the offense against the defense. Offense scoring is traditional. Defense scores via takeaway TDs (6 points), takeaways (3 points), 3-and-out (3 points), quarterback sack (2 points) and forced punt (1 point).

Recently promoted offensive coordinator Brian Hartline will get his first reps calling plays in a game format at the Ohio State Buckeyes' annual Spring Game on Saturday.

Ryan Day, head coach of the Buckeyes, has been in charge of offensive play-calling in seasons past. During the offseason, and following Ohio State's 42-41 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs at the 2023 Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Day announced he would be stepping away from that aspect of his coaching responsibilities.

Day said he would still wear a headset on the sideline and be available to assist Hartline should he be needed. Aside from that, the keys to the Buckeyes' offense are in the hands of the former Miami Dolphins wide receiver.

"We'll go through the game plan and we'll be able to show what we want to do in the game, and then we'll let Brian call and I'll be right there," Day said. "We'll probably huddle some so I'll be able to kind of relay some of that information real quick."
