Ryan Day is only 40 and is serving his first year as a head coach at any level, but he handled questions about the vacant Washington Redskins job like a savvy veteran who's dodged such inquiries for years.

Day declined to address speculation about whether he would have interest in moving from Ohio State to the NFL, where Washington fired coach Jay Gruden on Monday and where former Buckeye Dwayne Haskins was the team's first-round pick in April.

"I appreciate you asking," Day said. "Any time you're at a place like Ohio State, any time there's success, things like this are going to come up. I don't really want to talk about any of that stuff.

"I love it here. It's where I want to be. Whether it's good, bad or indifferent, hopefully for the next 5, 10, 20 years, however long I'm here, I really don't want to comment on that because I don't think it's good for anybody."

Day was later asked if he'd been contacted by the Redskins and he said, "No."

Pressed on whether he could envision a career at Ohio State approaching the duration of Woody Hayes' 28-year run, Day said: "I don't know if I can make it that long. That would be a good problem to have."

Haskins was the 15th overall pick in April and has not yet started a game in Washington.

He threw for 50 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions last year at OSU with Day as his offensive coordinator.

Day said he and Haskins spoke during the preseason when the Redskins played an exhibition in Cleveland.
