Insider: Ohio State 'Expects' To Use Dual-QB System vs. Indiana

With no starting quarterback named yet, a new report suggests that the Ohio State Buckeyes plan to use Kyle McCord and Devin Brown in their season-opener.

With just a week until the Ohio State Buckeyes kick off the regular season on the road versus Indiana, they still do not have a firm answer at starting quarterback yet. However, that doesn't mean they don't have a plan for Week 1.

According to a recent report from ESPN's Pete Thamel, the Buckeyes intend on using a dual-quarterback system to start the season against Indiana, as the competition between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown is reportedly neck-and-neck heading into game week.

“I actually talked to Ryan Day this morning and this will be a battle right through the Indiana game,” Thamel said on a recent edition of ESPN's College Football Live. “He said as of right now, he expects to play both quarterbacks in that game. ... What they want is to find a quarterback because they have to build an identity. They go to Notre Dame Sept. 23. By then, they certainly want to have that battle set.”

With the Buckeyes not being set to meet the Irish in South Bend, Indiana, until Week 4 of the season, their schedule sets up nicely for them to give each quarterback final opportunities to win the job.

Following the Week 1 matchup with Indiana, they will then play at home against Youngstown State, then Western Kentucky also in Columbus, before having to prepare for their first potential marquee matchup of the season.

While the dual-quarterback system may be an unpopular choice as it doesn't boast a good track record long-term, as teams would much rather have their starter decided before the opener, it will give Day and co. another tool for evaluation.

Michigan used it last season, giving J.J. McCarthy and now Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara a chance to start in their opening two games before choosing the latter. However, it seems Ohio State will use a different format for their battle, as both McCord and Brown look set to feature versus Indiana.
